Mississippi River Walleye Fishing Report 10-01-09

This past Summer’s guide trips were very successful. The groups I fished with saw some very nice walleye make it to the boat. Quite a few groups that spent time in my boat this summer saw three to six walleye in the 5-9lb class with 15-30 other legal walleyes to go with their bigger eye’s . This was the summer I will always remember as the “Summer Of Bait”. Cranks just never broke lose for my boat, sure a few fish here and there but never did I have a day where cranks could out produce bait. Casting or dragging jigs tipped with crawlers or leeches were very good for clients and myself.

Fall has begun! Up until Wednesday, I had not been on the big river since August 6th. I have been anxiously waiting for the water temps to drop out of the lower 70’s and upper 60’s to float my boat again. This past week with the cooler temps, the opportunity presented itself to get out and do some Fall fishing.

Typical Fall patterns have emerged ! The water temps are hovering in the low 60’s to upper 50’s dependent on your location. What is a Fall pattern you might ask? Depends on whether you’re the walleye or the angler?? If you’re a big walleye, you are going to be looking for shallow water to sink your teeth in to the abundance of baitfish present. If you’re the angler, think shallow as well! Casting crank baits, hair jigs and of course, jigs tipped with plastic bodies like ringworms, paddle tails, k-grubs. The gold ol’ jig and minnow could see some good walleye action as well under the right conditions.

On my last outing, crank baits took my two biggest walleye of the day those walleyes are pictured above. Kelley green hair jigs and paddle tails from B-Fish N Tackle in the pro blue color took some low 20” fish. I was focusing on rip rap targeting water less than 8’ deep. My best fish of the day was a 30inch 11lb 4oz walleye . This fish was taken in less than 4’ of water.

I’ll see you on the river!

  1. Good to hear from you Dustin, it’s been awhile. I can’t wait for the fall bite to get started because I haven’t been out since the August myself. Hope to get up your way this month, maybe even several times.

Funny how they just waited their for me to get back slider. It’s been so long since I have been on the river I was afraid that someone might haved moved them on me

The pic of me and the boy is one one of my favorites

  5. Great report Dustin. Good to see your getting that kid on some quality fish. I was driving home today wondering what all this rain may do the the river. With any luck it will come up a little and be the start to a fantastic fall bite. One can only hope.

  6. Wow! Now that was a great walleye fishing report.

    Great pictures!

After reading that, I’m officially ready to start fishing for fall walleyes.

  7. Thanks for the report Pal!!!
I am roped into duck hunting this weekend, and now all I will be thinking about is fishing–might be duck hunting one day this year and fishing the second. Did you by chance see any ducks flying around???? Maybe I could fish while Curt hunts ducks off the back of the boat.

    As always, GREAT FISH!!!!!!!!

  8. Hey of a fish, Stew! Remind me again why I turned down the invite to go play?

I have to tell you… it is good to see you back around the website more now that the youngin’ is getting a little more independent. What can I say besides you’ve been missed?!

  9. oh…how sweet! Brings to my eyes when you are kind like that.

Just think, if you would have taken me up on my offer that could have been your fish

True. Coulda. Woulda. Shoulda. I’ll just have to get out of this office chair and start hitting 2. Darn things only 15 minutes away. Not this week but soon. And hopefully often after that.

  11. Nice walleyes Dustin. Looks like its time to get back down to pool 4. Good to see Kaiden enjoys the water and fishing like his dad.

  12. Welcome back Dustin and thanks for the report. I will be back on P2 sometime this weekend as water temps are falling and the weather appears to be cooperating.

Hope to see a few other P2 guys out there this weekend

  13. You are really making my day Dusty! Al and I are coming down Monday and hav been praying for rain and lower water temps…
Its so sweet to think about Fall on Pool 4!!!

  14. So good to see you getting out and posting on the boards again Dustin.

Congrats on the great day what a sumo fish.

  15. Great fish, post and pics there Dustin! Fall is finally starting to show up around the Nebraska area as well. Waking up to lows in the upper 30’s the last couple mornings means the water temps are starting to drop here as well. Time to get out and start fishing for those fall walleye here as well. That river sure does produce some dandy fish though. Just hard for me to find time to get out and fish as much as I would like to with so many other things such as hunting starting to happen in the fall as well.
