The water temps finally came up and nothing is finer than to have a first time fisherperson stick a big one… Julie was my guest and a good student…She worked a tube jig to perfection for this nice Largemouth! I had to help hold the 5 lber up for the picture…
I set up Julie with a 6’9" Limit Creek rod… 8# PP Hi Vis Braid… 3.5" Mizmo Melon/Chart tube on a Get Bit 3/16 jig…Pfleuger 9025 reel.
Her boyfriend Justin treated her to her first fishing trip and she was a natural, putting about 15 bass in the boat.
Not much later the tenacious 97lb Julie set the hook on a wildly jumping Smallmouth… Closely listening to her coach, she masterfully landed another beauty… Justin and his Dad had to eat a little humble pie from Julie today… the bass were holding off deeper water breaklines, and slammin tube jigs!
My next trip was with good friend Rich (Moose) Henrion from Norway MI. Rich has been honing his skills at fishing plastics and today he was really "ON"!
A blustery windy day…I focused on points where the waves were crashing in on. This can disorient baitfish and usually brings on a good bite. A nice Largemouth from a windward point,on a smoke/red pepper tube.
We ended up having a great day. Over 40 bass released in just 3 hours!
Rich pretty much fished a smoke/green flake 3.5" tube on 8# PP braid…12′ flouro leader…3/16 oz Get Bit jig…St. Croix TWS70MLF rod…Cardinal 4 reel.
My favorite Bass spinning set up for Tubes is a St. Croix EX 68MXF…2/10 Power Pro braid, a 10-12′ flouro leader, and 3.5" to 4" tubes on a quality, Get Bit or Owner jig hook.
I run my jig inside the tube, pushing the hook eye up thru the front of the tube. Rigged this way, the tube spirals down on the freefall in a very enticing manner.
Please consider flattening the barbs on the jig hooks…you may lose a couple fish…but you may SAVE several from injury! Not to mention quick easy catch and release…
Get out there and take someone fishing!
More trip pics…Incl one young bass that attacked a 6″ Yamamoto Hula Grub on a NuckleBall Title Shot jig
Nice Job Tom, Great lookin’ fish
Good report Tom, whats the water temp up that way.
Today water temps on inland lakes are high 60s…we had a week to 10 days of low 70s but it was 47 this morning.
Lake Mich(Green Bay) up here is still in the 60s…We will have very little weed growth on the Bay for the whole season.
