Mississippi River Pool 8 Slop Bass Report

After some communicating back and forth with an IDO’er, Sunday was going to be a day showing a little of Pool 8 to member gutone4me (Pat). After dropping off my daughter for work we were on the water, just a tad late but still hoping to find the crappies to be cooperating. First three times over the boat with the white hair jig had three specks top side in a hurry. So I tossed a hair jig to Pat and that was it, them crappies glued there lips shut in fear of a spanking from the new comer
After moving around following schools of fish to no avail and wanting to put Pat on fish, it was time for a change in plans. Before the trip was made Pat was told to be sure and bring a casting rod just in case we needed a plan B or C. With the 25hp Merc lit on fire the boat was heading for another back water lake in hopes of finding the day saver, glad we were set up to be versatile

Arriving in an area that has been good lately for Bass and Pike the baits were tossed into lily pads and slop. The start was slow with some small blow ups and misses along with a worried look sportin’ my face It’s the look a guy gets when things are tough and all you want to do is put the new guy in the boat on some fish. Then it happened, Pat started to become a master of the slop and started sticking some Bass between the eyes with his moss boss The pressure was off and a bite was found bringing a new atmosphere into the 14 foot floater
It was a hoot just keeping the boat under control and watching the water erupt around
Pat’s bait as he tried to fight off the knee jerk reaction until the finned slop dwellers were committed to the object that dared too cross it’s path.

Some of the thicker slop held small pods of Bass. Moving along until creating some movement or a blow up in the green mat, and then slippin’ the anchor overboard slowed us down providing the opportunity to work an area holding fish over thoroughly …..transom mounted trolling motors do not make for a good bass boat and, neither does standing in the front of a V haul boat with your ankles bowed……right Jeff and Pat As the day grew on it became more important to slow things down. By noon the aggressive fish turned lazy and the hook ups became far a few between. Fish still presented themselves with a half hearted attempt at killing the intruder over head. Any time spent on the water is fun but thanks to being willing to change the game plan fish were caught, thank you Mr. Green fish for a bite, and thank you Mississippi for all the different species you provide for us people that just like to catch fish

The moss boss Pat whaled back into the thick veggie was the day saver for him, for me, a Black Spro frog and a gold silver Johnson tipped with a white K grub. One small pike made it boat side for a picture and a few follows to the boat from the toothy’s without committing to the spoon still made a guy feel alive.
What can I say….Mississippi water, you just got to love every thing about the muddy
It was fun Pat, we will have to load up the gear and do it again …. After your ankles heal!

Good luck fishing people
