Rainy Lake, Minnesota Walleye fishing report

Rainy Lake continues to place smiles on faces as the big walleyes have been cooperating despite less than desirable weather. Wind and rain has greeted many anglers as of late with some reversing water temps. Despite Ma Natures fury the fish have been very cooperative. Blue collar jig and minnow fishing has put huge numbers of awesome fish in the boat. Like always staying on top of baitfish movements has been key to locating the bigger schools of active fish. We’ve focused energies deeper with the inclimate weather and gradually follow the fish shallower as they come out from the hide and seek game with recent storms.

There has been some discussion as of late about our smelt/ciscoe population. If you’ve noticed that fish have been locating in some different areas this year that may have something to do with it. Yesterday I caught a walleye that spit out a 6 inch ciscoe, and the walleye was only 22 inches. For all the lindy rig draggers keep this in mind. There are plenty of big fish banging H20 jigs and minnows….Imagine that!! We’ve had our best success on secondary breaklines that have baitfish present. Get in those areas and have the digital camera ready!!

Although our fishing has been nothing short of spectacular I expect the angling opportunities to only get better as our weather stabilizes and these fish can settle in a bit. I’d like to thank all the Dads out there that took the initiative to take their kids fishing during my recent promotion. I had a great time, and based on all the smiles on the kids faces they did as well!! I’m not sure who is more excited when those kids hook big walleyes whether it is Dad, the kids, or ME!! Probably a toss up!!

Keep in mind with the vastness of Rainy Lake the fish are biting somewhere!! I’ve been overhearing some frustration in local baitshops over the past couple days. The fish are eating!! There is no need to put a 12 foot snell out there! Heck we’re snap jigging monster walleyes all day long!! Move to the active fish if those marked fish aren’t cooperating. Also keep in mind that fish marked amongst baitfish are GOLD!! Get ya some!! Have to keep this short and sweet 12-8 trip!! Tough job I’m telling ya, but somebody has to do it!!

    Daze, you’re killin me here!

    Great report as usual

  2. For those attending the 2009 Summer GTG on Rainy these reports are only going to get harder and harder to take while we wait for Sept. 16.

For those that missed the announcement, In-Depth Outdoors and Rainy Lake Houseboats will be co-hosting a Get-Together on Rainy Lake Sept. 16 – Sept. 20. That puts us dead smack dab in the middle of the prime fall walleye bite and the crappies and smallies should be prime as well.

Here’s the scoop on the GTG >>> 2009 Summer GTG on Rainy Lake

We’re limiting the attendance at 30 people so this event will fill fast. If you’re interested in attending shoot me an email or a PM so we can reserve your spot. Based on the initial interest I’m betting we’ll be 2/3rd full by middle of next week.

  3. Chris, thanks again for the great morning; the boys had fun and I was able to learn a bit about a lake I have never fished. We were able to fight the wind for a day and a 1/2 after we left you and found some dandy fish, thanks for the info shared.

If anybody is thinking about heading up to “Gods Country” give Daze a call.Hell, the trip thru the back channel was worth the price of admission.”PLEASE KEEP YOUR HANDS INSIDE THE RIDE AT ALL TIMES”

Thanks and see ya next year

    Mike
