Walleye report for Alexandria

Here’s a quick report from the walleye infested waters of Alexandria

The fishing the past couple weeks has been incredible! I’ve been on the water about everyday and even though fishing has been a little different each time out I’ve been fortunate enough to have been able to stay on active fish. I ended up picking up a last minute trip for today thanks to Gene and Kim, thanks again for the great day!

We hit the water early again and had nice steady action all morning. We boated many fish in the 15" – 20" range along with some nice big ones that came up to get their pics taken. Today was less than ideal weather wise with calm waters the entire day, but no one remembered to tell the walleye because the bite was great!

We were using lindy rigs with leeches and minnows with success on both. Our depth ranged from 11-17FOW and with the weeds becoming thicker and thicker keeping your bait clean was essential. Today’s water temps started out at 62deg and ended up at around 67deg.

Well that’s all for tonight, I have to get to bed it’s been a long day and I have another long one again tomorrow! Summer is finally here and it looks like it’ll be here for a while so come up to Alexandria and enjoy the fishing! Good Luck.

I bought my first boat when I was 13 and I've spent about every day since on the water or ice. I do most of my guiding on MilleLacs and in the Alexandria Lakes area.

  1. Way nice! How long was Kim’s PB?! From the pics it looks for be 27″+ and a very fat and healthy specimen but you know how hard it is to judge fish from pics.

Thanks for the report, Joe. I look forward to an early ice trip in your neck of the woods this winter. You ever run across some big early ice gills?

  2. Nice bag of fish! Was it hard to keep the sunfish or pike off the lindy rigs? I fished this weekend and had constant pike/gills attacking the leeches/minnows.

  3. Thanks for the report Joe and congrats to putting Kim on her PB Walleye!

  4. James, I don’t think we’ll have an issue getting into some big gills this winter. I usually hit the eyes pretty hard early but I’ll make some time to find some sumo sunnys for us!

    Thanks Pete!

Cal, it depends on the lake and spot but when I get into the eyes I don’t seem to be bothered be other fish. This time of year I use cranks or spinners to locate the fish then I rig em as that seems to be the most effective way to catch numbers when the water is below 65deg. This a general rule of thumb for me, but there are always exceptions to any rule. I have a couple lakes that have had a crawler/spinner bite going for the past few weeks already. There never seems to be just one answer does there!

Brad I hope everything went well Saturday? Sorry I couldn’t make it. I hope to get together with you for some open water trolling soon enough
Thanks Tim I’m sure I’ll see you soon as well.
I’ve been busy in the Alexandria area the past couple weeks but I’m headed to Mille Lacs on Wed for a pretty solid couple weeks. Maybe we can hit the cork bite after one of my trips? See you guys later

  5. Nice report Joe!

Nice to see a report from that neck of the woods. I used to go to school in Fargo and often wondered about the fishing potential in that neck of the woods when I drove by.

Nicely done getting some one their PB. I love doing that.!

I think we should count on doing both then!

Joe’s going to be working with us to bring some much needed attention to the Alex area. We’ll be looking to do an ice shoot with him early in the coming winter.
