Pool 2 Trolling

Pitching wing dams is not the only way to find hungry walleyes on pool 2. Long line trolling crank baits has also proven to be very effective in putting hungry walleyes in the boat this spring. Some days when there is a strong wind trolling can be a good option for boat control and still getting your lures down in front of some very hungry fish.

Lures of choice for us the last few weeks has been #5 and 7 flicker shads. Blue has been the best color going with lighter colors also being a good choice in low light conditions. Presentation and lure location has been key in triggering these fish to bite. Most of our time is spent with the lips of the crank baits ticking bottom. Along with this pausing the lures or pumping the rods has triggered a lot of fish to hit. Speeds have been 2mph or less and very a lot as I am constantly taking the motor out of gear and then going again. This photo is of a nice double we caught as I kicked the motor out of gear and let the lures slowly bounce over a nice rock hump in our trolling run.

We have been targeting most of our trolling run on the rocks. Outside bends of the river with some flow on them have been good. Depths running 5 to 10 feet. These areas have plenty of humps and turns for the walleyes to hide in. A person needs to get there lures down into these places to coax the fish out. This does mean donating a few lures to the river but it also means quality fish on the end of the line. Have the rite gear to troll with will help with not loosing so many baits.

My rod set up for lone line trolling are 7.5′ St Croix tide master with Shimano 17 size Sealines line counters on them. On this I run 20# Power Pro line attached to a good cross lock clip on the end for easy changing of the lure. This rod and line combo is great for feeling when your lure is hitting bottom or gets fouled out. The line counter is also great for duplicating presentation.

The walleye fishing on pool 2 has been great as of late. Pitching, trolling, vertical jigging and from what I hear even dragging has been taking good numbers of fish. The weather has been fantastic other than a few windy days. There is not a better time to get out and enjoy the river.

See you guys down there Tuesday for the next Moores walleye contest.

  1. nice work Mike, I’m planning on hitting p2 in the mornings a few times this week before work if you’re up for a little fishing before you start answering calls.
Where are you putting in typically for your trolling runs?

  2. Good report Mike! Long lining with flicker shads have also caught my attention and I used them quite a bit on Mille Lacs last year (also used them with leadcore). One of these days we need to hook up! Maybe we should plan a weekend when we hit both pool 2 and then Mille Lacs the next day!

  3. Sure thing Brad. Most Saturday mornings Im down on pool 2. Let me know when you want to go. Maybe you want to get some river scum on that nice new boat of yours?
