Mississippi River Walleye Fishing Report 6-01-09

The walleye fishing on the big river has been very good for me over the last couple of weeks. My boat has seen good numbers of fish applying a variety of presentations. Presentations ranging from trolling cranks on main river sand flats, dragging jigs thru submerged timer in the side channels, casting cranks, and pitching jigs to wingdams with leeches and crawlers have all put some dandy fish in my boat over the past 2 weeks.

My best trolling crank has been a #5 red craw jointed shad rap. While casting cranks #6 bombers and #7 flicker shads have been very good to me. Firetiger has been tough to beat for a color choice. 1/8oz to 3/8oz Precision heads in chartreuse/orange, or black, have been my best jig head colors while pitchhing jigs and bait. Blue or orange have been very good to me while draggin jigs on the main river and side channels.

The walleye have been very cooperative in several depths of water. The water temps over the last couple of weeks have still been cool enough for those bigger eye’s to roam around the river. The water temps are allowing them to take up residence where ever they please right now. Once those water temps climb in to the mid 70’s those bigger fish will be looking for areas with good current passing thru them to ambush bait fish.

Last week I gave Josh Johnholtz a call to fill an open seat. Thankfully Josh was able to take me up on my offer. With the wind howling 20mph out of the north/northwest jig dragging was not an option for us on this day. We tried cranks for a short bit with no luck. We finally decided to anchor the boat up and try our luck at casting jigs tipped with crawlers and leeches. We targeted one little current break for the day and put some nice fish in the boat. Crawlers took top honor on this day for numbers of walleyes but leeches won out on the bigger walleye. It was a great time fishing with you Josh. Good thing luck was on our side and we had some darn nice walleye cooperate.

Sunday was spent on the water with my buddy James Holst and his brother John. We put a nice bunch of walleyes in the boat on this day, both cranks and bait worked the magic. James was the photographer on this day. Last I knew him and his bro, along with the camera, were heading North on a fishing trip. Maybe when James gets back he will post up some of the pics from our day on the water. James, it was nice to share the same boat again, it’s been quite a while since we had the opportunity to hook up and spend a day on the river. It was kind of like the good ol’ days

The Walleyes are biting! I’ll see ya on the river!

When not at work I'm busy playing fishing guide on pools 3 and 4 of the Mississippi River.I will fish Lake Pepin but the bite has to be really good on the lake to get me off of moving water.

Heck yes I am Thanks again Dustin.

  5. Just a quick update from Wednesdays trip. I spent the day with Steve Sherwood and Bill Allen. The numbers of walleye were great on this day with some bigger fish as well. We concentrated on 6 little current seams for the day, running and gunning was the plan between these 6 spots. Our day was spent casting 3/16oz to 3/8oz precision jigs tipped with leeches or crawlers. Leeches seemed to put the best quality of walleye in the boat, crawlers took our biggest walleye of the day, cranks were good for both.

Steve is pictured here with our best three fish of the day in the 6.5lb to 9lb range. Congrats to Steve on his biggest walleye to date at 9lbs . Every time Steve’s been in my boat he’s been able to boat a new personal best river walleye. It will be tough to beat this one Steve, congrats! . We had a couple other 5lb fish that we never put on film as well. All in all, the walleye bite on the big river is going good right now

  6. Dustin, buddy, You sure know how to make a guy mad about being six hours away from Pool 4.

Glad to hear you and James got a chance to hit the water together again! Either of you figure out how to run your new Lowrance units yet?
