Rainy Lake, Minnesota Walleye fishing report!!

Another fantastic week of Combination trips has come to an end with huge numbers of slot fish, and the “Daze Casket” filled to the brim with eating fish heading for “Hot Oil” baths!! Whether customers were looking for Crappies or Walleyes Rainy lake was very generous once again here in the end of May. Our biggest walleye measured 29 1/4 inches today, and was effectively CPR’d!! Congratulations Geno for you new PB!! Uhh… Gene where is your……..And that is another one for me BOYS!! Where is the DR!!

I’ve been asked if I ever get tired of being on the water, or if being a “Fishing Guide” somehow takes away from the overall passion I have for the sport….. LOL!! RUKIDDING ME!! I’m gonna go with…. NOPE!! Watching Guys and Gals week in and week out drop the hammer on big Walleyes, Smallies, Crappies and Pike is why Captains get in the business!! Rainy Lake….Continues to be the backdrop, The Reason, The Producer of Digital Dreams being passed around at work between fellow anglers!! There is NO PLACE I’d rather be, and NO PLACE I’d rather be fishing!!

Big eyes are currently in a transitional stage which a pretty cool way of saying moving from spawning grounds to summer destinations stopping by for snacks in areas offering up free forage buffets!! Keep in mind gentleman that our water is still pretty cool with back bay surface temps climbing as high as 62 degrees this week in the peak of a sunny day while main basin water is in the low 50’s. This might mean Coconut drinks at shorelunch but calling for a Hot Brandy at night!! Water temps continue to be very volatile with cool nights. Tailoring presentations to the water temperatures when it comes to walleyes is a “Good Thing”. Cold temps means “nuetral fish” presentations for me. As the water temperatures EVENTUALLY warm we will step up our fishing techniques trying best to match the walleyes mood. This week light jigs hovered in transition cuts were very hot!! With our water remaining a bit higher than average “FLOW” is darn near as important here as for the boys on the mighty Miss!! Fishing bouldered areas with current has been a precious pattern keeping the Daze Team mining so much GOLD we’ve darn near sparked a new GOLD RUSH!!

Slabs have been “White Hot” one day and slowed the next with some instability in the weather. THAT IS crappie fishing!! I have always said Crappies are the easiest fish to catch, yet can be the hardest (You picking up what I’m puttin down??). Finding the fish is key, and of course when searching for these Rainy Lake slabs you need to be in the search while they are biting. Otherwise you may very well be on fish without knowing it. No Problem just cruise on back through the 220,000 acres tomorrow!! Crappies like weather stability like know other fish I know. Gradual rising mid-day temps and high sun often times gets slabs jacked for a big meal. Cool conditions and wind more often than not will have these fish picking through a meal for a day. Once again tailoring your presentations to the day will often be the difference between success and failure!! As predicted Rainy Lake is boasting a tremendous population of slabs!! Good fishing Team!! From the land of BIG FISH and small crowds!!
