I spent much of the Memorial Holiday weekend on the water and at the campground of this beautiful body of water, and once again Lewis and Clark Lake near Yankton, South Dakota continues to produce very nice catches of healthy walleye. I had the good fortune of spending my time on the water with my Father-in-law, Tim Zoucha, and my brother-in-law, Tim Zoucha Junior, both pictured here with four of the several 19-inch walleye that were netted on this trip.
With water temperatures warming, we had hoped that the crank bait bite would be taking off, and it was. I had heard from a good buddy, and fellow IDO member Mike Means that cranks had produced a very nice bag of walleye for Mike and his partner in last week’s tournament. Mike and his partner Dean finished second last weekend, so I figured he must know something.
We began by trolling a number of different crankbaits to let the walleye tell us what they wanted. In short time, we had all tied on a firetiger shad as that was the hot bait. We trolled the tops and edges of the flats, as well as breaklines near the shoreline. All areas produced fish, with the flats being the most productive on this trip. Trolling depths were anywhere from 7.5 feet to 14 feet of water, with all depths producing fish.
Trolling speeds were approximately 2.2 MPH on the Lowrance GPS. I used a Lindy Drift Control drift sock to keep my speed down, using my 90HP Mercury outboard to pull the cranks. The sock was key to keeping the boat at the right speed while also fighting the wind which kicked pretty hard at times. If you have trouble with boat/speed control while trolling, I suggest you give this technique a try. It was one of the keys to our success this weekend.
Have a great week everyone!
Great report Wade, nice lookin fish!
I’ve been reading more and more about trolling bags and drift socks helping aid in gaining more speed control while trolling, It might be time to try some out
Nice report and fish Wade! You look a little warmer than you did on P-4!
Looks good Wade!
Nice fish Wade.
It looks like you boys had some. I might just have to try the ol Missou again this 4th of July.
Great job Wade. I will try to post some pics tomorrow as I am running around pretty busy right now. By the way, my wife will let you know: She caught the most fish, first fish, biggest fish, smallest fish and the last fish. Good to see you again and hopefully we can get together real soon.
Mike
Mike, as always it was great to spend a little time with you and Kellie. I’m well aware that she kicks your butt fishing. All wives do!
I won’t say this too loud, but we need an all boys trip sometime this summer. We need to get Ben, Jason, and Rick up there for a weekend. It could get a little ugly!
Tom, it was MUCH warmer, but I’m more than happy to freeze my backside off if it means I get to spend a little time on the water with good friends… and if the ‘eyes are snappin’, of course.
Any time Lip. You always have a place to stay!
Nice report Wade. Very nice Lewis and Clark ‘eyes. It was great talking to you and Tim on Sunday. See you next Sunday!
See you Sunday!
