Mississippi River Walleye Fishing Report 5-19-09

The walleye bite on the big river has been sporadic and very day to day for my boat the last few outings. My boat has not seen large numbers of walleye in one day but the average size of the walleye put in the boat have made up for the lack of numbers. As of last week the flow on the part of the river I have been targeting was still high enough to keep those bigger fish pinned in the deeper side channels and cuts. Slowly 3-waying crawlers up river was my best presentation to pull these bigger walleye from their under water haunts. Very few fish have come on leeches for me in the past 2 weeks.

This past weekend the flow had dropped to a managble level persuading a lot of walleyes to start moving out of the deeper holes relocating to more of their summer haunts on shallow sand and clam beds. Dragging jigs and trolling crank baits have been my presentations of choice. These presentations will allow you to cover more water and locate active fish faster than 3-waying one small current break on the river right now. Now that the flow has dropped those fish do not have a reason to hold in one small area like they have in the past 3 weeks

While 3-waying crawlers chartreuse/orange floaters have been best for me. Draggin Jigs in orange, blue, chartreuse or black have been the best jig colors for my boat. Jig size has solely been dependent on the area I am targeting.

I have heard second hand info that the lake bite is going good trolling lead core right now. I have not personally been down to check it out. All of my attention has been focused on the main river and side channels.

The walleye bite will only get better from here on out for numbers of fish. Get out and get fishing!

I’ll see ya on the river!

When not at work I'm busy playing fishing guide on pools 3 and 4 of the Mississippi River.I will fish Lake Pepin but the bite has to be really good on the lake to get me off of moving water.

Might want to up date your report Sir!

I think a three man limit with the big fish of the day coming in at 7 pounds is a pretty darn good day!

I noticed your clients today had smiles from ear to ear too…so I’m thinking they might have had a good trip too.

  7. Yup, your right Brian the bite has been good for 2-3 man limits of eaters with a nice fish or 2 thrown in the mix . Trolling cranks was best for my boat the last 3 days that I spent on the water.
