This spring has been any thing but typical. A cold start, constant fronts and constant winds. The water temps have been stuck in the 58-60 degree range for weeks. With all of what has happened I was shocked at what we found today. Bass in mid-summer patterns. Irrespective of the slow start I haven’t seen a pre-spawn largemouth in a week. There are still a few smallmouth on beds but that’s about over.
My guest Friday was Al Haas of Davenport Iowa. The plan was to swim jig emergent vegetation. What we found was an explosion of submerged vegetation and the fish scattered. There were fish around but no rime or reason to where they were. We tried a few sand-drops with no results, so the question was where next? Well I wouldn’t expect it but we found fish in timber in current.
Go figure but that’s the way we caught our fish. The highlight of the day was Al’s 4-15 Largemouth. We both agreed we’d like to have seen her pre-spawn. She’d been well into the 5 pound range. All of our fish came on a black/blue jig and Yum Craw Paddie trailer. All I can say is to throw the play-book out and look every where this year.
nice fish guys… doesnt hurt to try it all once in a while
