We headed out again today in search of Monster Pike and weren’t disappointed!
Again, we were able to target the big females as they are in recovery mode, post spawn. The big fish weren’t as concentrated today, however a couple of variables might have played into today’s bite. We are in the middle of a cool down, and as the day worn on, things became cloudy, windy and a bit chilly. I also noted water temps have increased a couple of degrees from 48 – 49 to 50 – 52. Despite the weather changes, we were still able to boat 5 – 6 pike over 40”, the biggest a hair over 45”.
I was able to contribute to the big fish board with my two pike, one 41” and the other just under 44”. I had to troll a bit farther today, however I stuck with one presentation that worked extremely well. The orange backed, gold bellied, Blue Fox #2 Minnow Bait landed me a nice variety of eaters in addition to the two trophies.
The other variable that has been present in the last two outings is sucker fish. I am not up to speed on when they spawn, however, they are up close and personal with the big pike, which, to me, would seem a risky cohabitation. It was a nice tell, where we saw sucker fish, we caught pike.
Trolling and casting worked well today. Trolling seemed to land more eaters in addition to the big pike.
Until next time…
For those that missed it, Pasha Lake is offering FREE cabin rentals in May 2009.
I’ll give that a second to sink in.
Yup, FREE! Drive there, fish there, stay there in May for FREE. The downside is all the big pike and then towards the end of the month you’ll have endless walleye to deal with. But you’ll just have to find a way to cope.
Here’s the details >>> FREE Cabin Rentals @ Pasha Lake May 2009
Chad….are these fish being caught right on Pasha Lake or are you driving to another lake. Such as Nipigon?
Thanks
Hey Calvin –
Good to hear from you…
We are fishing the Pasha Lake chain right from camp. We could go through the culvert, but opted to take the 4 wheeler and launch just across the street.
My first of the year, as the ice was receding, was a nice 40″er while I waited for the kids to get home from school. That was right here on Pasha Lake.
We do have a group up here right now taking advantage of the IDO promo. They have landed several lake trout, pike and white fish right here on Pasha Lake.
Headed out again tomorrow and will report then…
Thanks
Chad
PS – Nipigon Ice should be out this week… then it gets REALLY interesting for big pike..
Also Walleye opens in 22 hours….
Nice fish & pictures!
Next to walleye fishing, pike fishing is one of my favorite things to do. Getting into some giants like those in your pictures would be awesome.
Gotta give that a shot someday.
