P9 Weekend Activity

The northwestern breeze coupled with the sun playing peek-a-boo amongst a sky full of cotton ball like clouds kept the mercury from hitting the 60 degree mark on Saturday. With my future fishing partner in the boat due to turn four in October – finding active fish wasn’t a high priority on his agenda. Catching minnows by the tail racing around the bottom of the bucket and “petting” fish good ole dad was catching diverted his attention from the that brisk sunless breeze.

I started the mid afternoon spending a little time fishing the mouth of two converging back water running sloughs that run 4 to 6 feet deep dumping into a 10 foot pocket before making the way south as one. Suicidal white bass were stacked and provided some great action! Tossing a pumpkinseed grub tail on a 1/8 oz jig allowing the river current to do the majority of the work had the Avid series rod bent over time and time again. Limited to only 8 fingers and 2 thumbs I lost track of count as to how many I did pleasure. Would have stayed with the WB longer but the eagle perched in a tree down stream was getting irritated with me perched so close to her nest. Pulled anchor and headed for current & rocks in search of smallies.

Boated five respectable size bronze backs off the current break on the same ole presentation. Pumpkinseed 5" lunker grubs. With the wind whistling a good tune down this chute I opted to go looking for some crappie…..

Crappie are one of my sought after river prizes. Why? Don’t know. Just something about that Thill sinking into the abyss that gets the ole heart a thump’n. It didn’t take but 30 seconds when the Thill twitched a couple times and started to sink. From that point it was literally non-stop action. A minnow lip hooked on a # 8 barbless a foot below the Thill was all it took. These fish were in spawning beds in 2 feet of water and redefined the word "aggressive". I boated well over 50 looking for that 16 inch wall hanger on the outer edges of the stew. All but nine were released, in which they’ll too be released but into grease. Selective harvest is a MUST if you should happen to stumble across a crappie spawning bed or make your way to a known location in the next week or so on P9.

  1. Okay….now that I’ve back edited this report as I’m a virgin to the picture loading process here’s some additional Kodak moments. You’ll have to excuse the “headless” shot of your’s truely holding a WB up. My son was running the camera.
