Mississippi River Walleye Fishing Report 4-30-09

With the water temps in the low 50’s, the walleye spawn is a thing of the past for this year. Right now walleye can be caught on a wide array of presentations. Pick your poison on how to boat river Walleyes. Casting, trolling, jigging, rigging, dragging jigs will all put walleye in the boat right now. The fishing is still on the slow side, very sporadic from day to day but the size of the eye’s has more than made up for the lack of numbers on my last couple of trips.

Since I last wrote I have only been on the river 3 times. Two of those trips were decent for bigger fish, the other trip we struggled to put a limit of eaters in the boat. That’s fishing for ya! My best presentations have been 3-waying crawlers and pitching ring worms. The plastics will get a good workout in my boat up until the water temps hit the low to mid 60’s. Best ringworm colors for my boat have been gold cracker or firecracker /chartreuse tail on sour apple precision heads. Jig head weight has been predominately determined by your location. 1/8oz on up to 3/8oz jigs have been utilized.

I would like again to thank the groups that fished with me over the last 2 weeks.

The water levels have remained stable over the past week, water clarity is very good for this time of year. Debris is minimal, the river is in great shape and some of those big river walleye have been cooperating…….get out and get fishing!

I’ll see ya on the river!

When not at work I'm busy playing fishing guide on pools 3 and 4 of the Mississippi River.I will fish Lake Pepin but the bite has to be really good on the lake to get me off of moving water.

  1. Great Report Dustin! Sounds like I better not pack plastics away quite yet!

I’ve got to get down there soon, Dean – See you soon

  2. Great work Dustin. I guess if the fishing is going to be a little slow those are the kind of fish that will still make your day on the water GREAT!!
