Mille Lacs Ice Fishing

After a week of thin ice and a mediocre bite, it was nice to be able to get to some of our “A” spots. Saturday morning we were greeted with 8-9 inches of solid clear ice on the main lake giving us the chance to get to spots that had been open water the week before. After a little searching it didn’t take long to get into the big fish. The first picture is Adam with a healthy 26 incher.

As the day went on we were able to find a few eater fish. We found that working deeper edges was producing the smaller or eater size fish. The second picture is a nice slot fish the just squeaked in under the line. In all we ended up with 7 fish that would have been legal to keep.

Of course, for the evening we had to get back to our big fish bite. This lead us back to some of our favorite shallow water early ice spots. It didn’t take long to get into the big fish. Pictured is a dandy 27 incher that Adam caught, one of 5 he got that size for the day.

Just before our day of scouting was complete I got into this dandy fish that taped in at the 28-inch mark. It was a great day on the pond and was a good indicator of how this winter will be. In all, we caught 19 walleye on the day with 7 fish going over the 6 lb mark. Not pictured is a dandy 37 inch pike that we got fishing walleye. Not a bad day for the first day on our “A” spots.

  1. Nice report Scott but you forgot to tell us one thing….. What were you using. Now go back down to Horseshoe and find them fish!!!! I’ll be up the weekend of the 28th. Find them fish boy!!!!!LOL

  2. Steve, The big fish came in 12-15 ft of water. I am sure shallower would have worked too. We targeted this depth because we like to be near deep water. The smaller or eater fish were mostly in the deeper water or 19-24 ft edges.

Here is a cool picture from the day. This is Adam checking the depth with the MarCum LX-i, check out the background. Typical Mille Lacs!!

  3. Adam has a guide trip on Wednesday so he will be on the water all day. I won’t be back on the water until Thursday I believe, but I have to check the schedule.

  4. Hey Scott!

I just talked to that “P” guy, and apparently we are going Thursday now………..So….If ya want a couple of “TAG ALONGS” let me know!
