Spring Walleye’s Green Bay

Made it back from my second week in Green bay and the fishing is just getting better and better. I can not get over how this fishery is so amazing for consistent numbers of giant walleye’s! This past week in 5 days of fishing clients boated 34 walleye’s over 27 inches.

One day this past week we landed 22 fish over 27 inches, and everyone was caught on a jig with gulp, including a giant 12. 8 ounce spawned out walleye. Easily the biggest spawned out walleye I’ve ever had the pleasure to put my hands on! If this fish had eggs it would have been a 15 lb fish and the great thing is my client let her go to fight another day. I’ll post the pics when I get time. To find a spot and to catch these fish on jigs was a night I will never forget as a fisherman, literally my jaw dropped time and time again as we could not have timed it any more perfectly along with being the only other fisherman in this spot.

Also fished a different area up in the bay where I had a father and his 2 kids and we caught a ridiculas amount of walleye’s casting 1/4 ounce darter head jigs with gulp. All the fish we caught were 22-26 inches and fought great.

Trolling is also working well with cranks and stick baits behind boards both day and night for the walleye’s.

Heading back up there this week, weather dependant.

  1. Here’s a few more pictures from this past week. Check out the giant 12.8 lber post spawn just shy of 34 inches. Fish was caught with a jig and gulp at night. Honest to gods truth, got on a awesome bite jigging at night, and the bigger profile 4 inch gulp caught all 22 fish over 27 inches in 4 hours of night fishing.

I’ll post a few more pics tomorrow

  2. Thanks Doug I can tell you one thing it’s certainly not easy to figure these big fish out but after fishing here for 15 year specifically in the spring it makes it easier!

Here’s a few more pics from this past week. Sorry if some are repeats. There is nothing better than catching a big giant fish on a jig and to be able to catch so many big fish at night with jigs was a real treat for all of us to experience, typically it’s a trolling bite but I’ve been casting and jigging “spot on the spots” and it’s starting to pay off big time!

  3. photoshop’ed… must be photoshop’ed… keep telling myself that… I grew up in the Green Bay area and never fished out there.

    WOW! those are pigs!!!

Here’s a call I’ll be making soon… “Hi Dad, mind if I tow the boat over and stay at your house for a few days? Some guy posted some pictures on the internet and he said they caught a few nice fish out on the bay…”

  4. Wow those are some monster eyes. Is the season open year round on Green Bay? Did you catch any smaller fish like 15 -20 inchers. Great catching. I hope to be out there in a few weeks and catching something.

  5. Nice eyes eric!!! I was in Florida all last week or I would have been up there for at least a day. Hoping to get up there in the next week or two. Again great fish!

  6. Awesome report and pictures Eric!!!! That’s why I feel that Green Bay is the most overlooked walleye fishery in the country. The current regulations of 1 fish 15″ or over per person will keep it that way.

  7. HI ERIC,
I’AM GLAD I SAW YOUR PICTURES , I BE FISHING OUT OF OCONTO OPENING DAY MAY 2nd. W/ CAPTAIN BRETT JOLLY, HOPE HE CAN PUT US ON SOME FISH LIKE THE ONES YOU ARE SHOWING US? THANKS FOR THE INFO

  8. Oconto is a great area for numbers of fish but I do not fish there much, because the lack of 30 inch class fish that typically hang out there is on the slim side. I fish other area’s that consistently yeild big fish, sometimes not the numbers of fish but I’ll take 5 big fish over 20 medium fish any day.

Now if your looking for an occasional big fish and good numbers of 18-26 inch fish Oconto is hard to be beat, great place to fill up the cooler with numbers of fish. Only problem there is the boat traffic at times it’s a zooooooo I like to get a way from the crowds if possible with my clients.

    Best of luck!

  9. OPENING DAY ON GREEN BAY OFF OCONTO WITH CAPTAIN BRETT JOLLY TROLLING WITH WORMS AND CRANKS, BEST TIME OF OUR LIVES. VERY WINDY DAY BUT WE STILL CAUGHT OUR LIMIT OF WALLEYES THANKS TO CAPTAIN JOLLY. WE HAVE TO TRY THOSE JIGS WITH GULP. THANKS FOR THE TIP

  10. Glad to see you guys caught fish! Oconto is a great place for numbers of fish now and it’s a super easy trolling bite there, unfortunately it does not hold many big fish consistently, that being one the reasons I don’t care to fish there much. But for guys looking for limits of eyes and an occasional big fish this is a great area. Actually anywhere in the southern half of the bay is on e fire for eaters.
