It’s that time of the year where I’m giving the brown trout a well deserved rest and chasing big eyes up in Green Bay. This is absolutely one of my favorite things to do in the spring is specifically target big walleye’s! And in my opinion there is no better place in the state for consistent numbers of big walleye’s day after day.
Well the bite is on with big fish and some decent numbers of fish! The pattern has changed big time with lack of current in rivers drawing fish up to spawn, and a lot more fish are out in the bay! Several days this past week I had 4-5 fish over 29 inches some with eggs and some spawned out. I have been chasing some pre spawners and they are still there but they are in the colder water, the steady action is in the warmer water now from the lower bay all the way up to the border.
We also caught some fish as deep as 35 feet of water suspended and as shallow as 5 feet depending on the area and the water temps
Trolling has been the ticket for numbers of big fish and this past week I boated a pig with my buddies along with 2 of my friend boating there personal best eyes.
The good news is if you want to chase big fat girls (walleye’s that is..:-) ) there are still plenty of fish pre spawn just look for area’s with cold water and rock! I will be heading over to the East shore as soon as that ice is gone for some awesome fishing as well, and the sturgeon Bay shipping canal is also hot right now for prespawners. Trolling cranks and stick baits has been the best with both lead core, snap weights and long lining behind the boards depending on the depths I’m fishing. Several of the area’s I’m fishing we’ve had all to ourselves even on weekends which is nice!
I will be up in Green Bay for the next 3 weeks and home only a few days for family time.
I have a ton of pictures but I’m only going to post the fish that are 27 inches or bigger.
Best of luck!
Heading back up tomorrow and I do not have much time to post up in Green Bay here’s a few more pics some prespawn some post spawn.
Great looking fish Eric. Thanks for sharing!!
Very nice fish and pics….
Holy crap!! Now THOSE are some fish….great report!
Those are some great pics Eric !!! I was just in awe of how big those walleyes are you have in your back yard !!
Good luck up at GB and I look forward to your report !!!
Thanks a bunch! Green Bay is just an amazing place to fish for big fish!
Here’s a few more big fish from this past week. Heading back up now.
Eric,
how long will these big girls be on the bite ? Is it to late to hook up and catch some of these beauties ?
Even by your standards, those are some dang nice walleyes Eric!
Thanks Joel thanks Dave! Unfortunately I’m booked solid into May as of now. Sorry about that.
I’m starting to book trips for spring 2010 up in the bay. Spring is the best time to consistently catch the 28-32 inch class fish for me up in the Bay.
Eric
Great job Eric. Those fish all look really healthy. When I was up there a couple of years ago we caught a lot of fish with the VHS virus. How are things looking with that right now? I can’t wait to get back up there again sometime.
Eric:
That is hilarious!!! I am ONLY going to put up pictures of fish that are 27″ and longer!!! And you have only put up aaaaaa… 2 dozen!!!
Oh sorry, only 20!!!
Mark
Nice job Eric –
This is a great reminder that you don’t have to drive to Lake Erie in the spring to get on numbers of big fish. Green Bay is a lot closer to the midwest and offers a great shot at a true trophy and numbers of large fish. Combine that with you don’t have to deal with the muddy water of the Western Basin of Erie right now and you have a winner.
I can’t wait to get back out to one of my favorite spots to fish!

AMAZING
Ben,
I’ve fished up here for 15 + years and have yet to see a fish with VHS. I have seen plenty of fish with a few bumps and blemishes but not characteristics of VHS from what I know about the Virus. Typically it’s most visable when water temps are below 40 degree’s (this is what I’ve been told) by the biologists.
Fishing the past 2 days has been fantastic a few over 30 inches, many in the 26-28 inch ranges both trolling and jigging. I’ll try to post some pics when I get home this weekend.
Time to get some sleep at the hotel up here!
Eric
