Pool 10 “Gett’n Jiggy Wid It”

I got up this morning at 4:30 and turned on the weather channel to see what the wind was doing…3 MPH I was up and out the door headdin for the dam.

Armed with a hand full of ringworms and precision jigs from BfishN Tackle, I anchored up below the dam on a nice current seam. I threw 3/16 to the inside of the seam and ¼ oz to the out side. Ringworms in Chartreuse Orange Core, Fire Tiger, Purple Chartreuse tail were my first go to colors with no avail. I remembered that Fishbizbob from Custom Jigs and Spins whipped up some ringworms in one of my favorite KG colors Motor Oil Gold. I loaded one up with a Gloss Black Precision Jig and hooked up with my first walleye.

I was contacted by Keith Millard of WKTY radio out of LaCrosse Wi earlier in the week wanting to know if I would shoot the bull with him on his radio show Saturday morning. I said I would be glad to…Anyone that knows me is well aware of my ability to talk, especially when it comes to fishing…I made sure to say hello to all the IDO folks here just incase you were listening

There were several guys fishing the inside of the long wall picking up some perch. If any of you are familiar with that there is not a lot of room to get by each other.. Well about the time I heard the splash there was a fella climbing out and on his knees. I couldn’t tell how wet he was but by the sounds of the splash we was going to be making a B-Line for his vehicle

One thing I have always noticed is how the walleyes will inhale the ringworms…Way back when I started fishing plastics I started out with the little 2” twister tails…Now I did catch fish, I noticed I would get a lot of short hits. Why is this I wondered ??? I did not like using stingers because of all the crud they would hook up…So when I started using RW’s I noticed the more aggressive hit while either pitching or v-jigging.. Bigger bait = bigger strike ? well that’s easy enough…but why ? I think, now this is just my opinion, is that the fish can feel water displacement or a disturbance that the bait gives off. The jig and minnow has a little action, a 2” twister tail has a little more and the Ring Worm has more yet with the K-Grub even more…with that information in mind, I think the walleye feels that it has to give a more aggressive approach to taking in it’s meal on a bait that has a larger water displacement, therefore giving us a feeling of a more aggressive strike…

Thanks for reading my report and I hope to see you on the water

  1. hey guys

man it was beautiful out there this morning..only wish I could have stayed out there all day

I was looking at the details of the flow and river stage..I don’t know how I fat fingered them numbers in there but the real info is this River Stage 12.17ft and the flow was 87.8kcfs

Lets see what this winter storm does to the river

  2. Great news and info. However, I planned on the weather being intolerable so just ignored the idea of going. By the time I had realized the mistake it was too late. Darn Heck it got to 51 here yesterday and no wind. Lost another day on the river. Darn. The weather next week looks good 50 plus.

  3. Nice eye Mr. Koonce! I didn’t fair so well 32 hours before the first pitch of the MLB season. Struck out as so to speak…

  4. Nice job Dave. I should have headed that way, I went up to Pool 4 and struggled. Looks like you have the high water figured out!

  5. Nice report Dave. We were on pool 11 and did okay. I was fishing with my buddy Ron and he caught a PB 27.5″. She was a fattie too. Let her go.

  6. Great job Dave!!!

Can’t wait to see you in a month at the Big D!!!

Oh, BTW Dave…this young man was down here on Pool 3 & 4 testing his hookset for the opener.

Claims he is gonna put a hurtin’ on you and Bobber!

  7. Great report Dave and very good point about how larger baits affect water displacment causing more aggressive bites!

I also enjoyed your radio broadcast and good job plugging In-Depth Outdoors!
