The spring walleye on the Wisconsin river below the Dells dam is getting real close to peaking. Surface water temps are running anywhere from 39 to 41 degrees and plenty of females walleyes are around. The bite can still be hot or cold but if you work at it, you can still connect often enough to make it worth while even on the tough days.
Spent some time on the river below the Dells dam on Sunday. We arrived around 10:30am and fished until dusk. Overall, the bite was pretty slow but despite that, we actually had two doubles. The first double occurred shortly after we setup. Kevin Clark pulled in a very nice 19-3/4″ walleye that drilled a chartreuse/pepper colored ringworm from B’Fish’N Tackle and I hooked up with a 19-1/4″ walleye on a split shot/minnow rig.
Around 12:30pm, a dandy slot walleye drilled my ringworm from B’Fish’N Tackle. This fish just crushed an oystershell colored ringworm from B’Fish’N Tackle. She had the entire bait so far in here mouth that nothing was visible until we pried her jaws apart. No worries though, she was returned unharmed right after posing for this photo.
After that though, the bite shut off for us and we spent the next couple hours cruising around looking for another bunch of active fish. We did find some more active fish but unfortunately, some were just to small and the others were the wrong species.
A pair of smallies decided to provide the second double of the day for Kevin Clark & I. Both came on ringworms. This time I was casting a Firecracker colored ringworm & Kevin was throwing a Fire-N-Ice/chartreuse tail ringworm, both from B’Fish’N Tackle.
Mean while, Kevin Sime, the third guy in our boat, managed to pull in a couple of shorties vertical jigging with a gold/cracker colored ringworm. (that was between taking pictures for us)
A bit later in the day, Kevin Clark pulled in our last decent walleye (17 inches) which also hammered a ringworm. I’m not sure what color he was using by that time. We went thru at least two dozen different colors by that time.
Tough day or not, it was nice to get back out on the river below the dells again.
Great report Joel
Great report Boog! Those dang plastics are contagious, aren’t they. We need to get together so I can take you “blade pitchin” too!
Another awesome read Joel
Them smallies have some great color to them
Lets say a guy was to head that way this weekend What kind of depths are them eyes coming from?
Nice report . Thanks again for having us aboard. I’ve been on them DUCK rides and the tour we took was way better, you get to soak up all the beauty the Dells has to offer. Thanks again and i’ll be calling in a few weeks. I think the fish gods are making Kevin Sime pay his dues for that 9+ he caught at Everts ,maybe not .
Yeah my luck was a little cold this weekend but great to go fishing with Joel. Brett, most of the fish we caught were pitching up into shallow water and the letting the current sweep the bait into a deeper 10-12 foot deep slot that had a nice current seam. Down river was 10-15 feet of water and the current was really trucking. Joel is as fine a boat control guy as I’ve ever fished with. It was a challenging day in 15 mph winds swirling all around. I think next year at red wing we will turn netboy loose to find a pitching bite for us.
Bret,
If your looking for some better fish, stay shallow.
Our better fish all came from 6′ to 10′ deep. I found that out for sure when our anchor gave way several times later in the day. Shore fishing will most likely be going real strong this week!
Nice report. Glad to see you survived a day with the Kevins. You are obviously a patient man.
Patient no doubt. Kevin only had a couple dozen bites he “missed” and only Dewey’d his trolling rod once.
Great post Joel
You always seem to grind out nice fish, even in tough bite periods
Great report Boog! Seems like just yesterday we were reading your reports about breaking through the ice at Thanksgiving!
Nice fish!!!
All them missed bites must have been from the poolcue rod(old faithful) and walleye inexperience, which caught more than your buggywhip and infinate knowledge , as i said, it’s all in the hands of the beholder ,even if he is a bass guy . As for the trolling rod line, i have no idea, it started wrapping around the prop when it was in the rod holder, didn’t have alot of line out until i opened the bail to save tackle, and save it we did. I like the new term Dewey’d That pitching gig sounds like it is right up my alley.
You are easier to get a rise from than small mouth bass.
Also that chicken you smelled and liked so much was likely the fire they had at the Ducks place. I guess burning snack bars is what gets your mouth watering.
Great report Joel. Sounds like you have them figured out even when they really don’t want to cooperate.
We know that them bottom feeders don’t rise to the top, don’t we. When your hungry, hell yeah. See ya later Whisker,as always, it’s been a great ride so, keep them tires inflated and gas tank full.
Yup…it was like that all day with these two characters in the boat.
Guess I should have bought that “Prop Guard” from Dean after all.
I think Jeff Jensen hit it on the head. We just grind it out through a tough bite. What else are you gonna do?
Very cheap entertainment, next time i’ll bring earplugs and aspirin.
Get a load of Kevin’s previous personal best
Get two bass guys in the boat with you instead of one.
Hey Whisker, somebody is looking for a co-angler for the BWS,you should sign-up,you may learn something ,and that’s all the better the guide was when i caught my alleged personal best, who was that guy anyway
Beware the guy always taking pictures. Nice smile though.
Yeah Yeah, thanks for all the Great memories(to many to remember without pics) and i cant wait until we can make some more.
Good report guys!
Nice fish and report Joel!
Great job Joel. Got to love doubles.
Great report Joel. Don’t let Tom talk you into the blades when the plastics rock! BTW- those curltails I showed you at the hgarbor are doing very well
Nice report Joel and congrats to everyone! You got to love those multi-species days!
