Mississippi River Walleye Fishing Report 3.21.09

Is there a better way to spend a 60 degree day than on the water with your Dad and Brother walleye fishing?!? I think not, and when you throw in a good bite, the day gets that much better!

We loaded up the boat and truck and headed north at six am. We were a little leery of going all the way to Guttenberg to fish pool 11 with all of the negative reports coming from the previous weekend.
However, with a little luck, and strong determination, we were going to pattern the fish.

This first picture is of my Dad, and our boats best fish of the day. I am sure that it was all of seven pounds! Beautiful fish!!

Our efforts were concentrated on slower current areas adjacent to faster current seams. The fish seemed to be holding in very specific areas in the 20-24 foot depth range. If we would slip out into too strong of current or too deep of water, our presentations would not get taken. The hot baits for the day were BFT’s precision jig heads in the 5/8 ounce size. Purple pearl was my color of choice paired with a purple/white tail ringworm. The walleye’s absolutely crushed this deadly combo! Earlier in the morning, when the sun was not as bright, the new purplecracker ringworm paired on the purple pearl jig head was very effective.

Dad, my brother, and I had a blast sharing time on the water! Thanks for the company guys! I would guess that we released eight fish over 20″. We also kept some very nice eating size walleyes and saugers.

If you have a case of cabin fever, make sure you pick up some purple jig heads, and ringworms from BFT, and go hit the river. She is running extremely clean right now, and the fish are cooperating very well!!

Good luck stay safe, and we’ll see you on the water!!

  1. Great report Luke!!.. I’m looking forward to hitting the big river here soon. I hope to get out in the morning close by for some small river eyes…I’ll keep ya posted!!

  2. getting out with Dad & the family is priceless! Getting my dad in the boat next week, can’t wait. Thanks for the report Luke!

  3. I also fished pool 4 on 3/21/09 with less than a good bite!

Got to Everts resort at 7:00am and had the normal long line of boats to wait for, but everything moved pretty quickly! Launched the boat at 7:30am and headed up river to about 1 mile down river of the dam, started fishing in 8-12 fow casting 1/4oz jigs and ringworms with a slow retrieve to no avail. Moved up river into the loch side and started upstream at .05mph on the gps jigging a 1/4oz jig and minnow and that went over like a fart in church, I was not marking very many fish and the ones i was marking were not interested at all.

Ended the day at 2:30pm right up next to the wall on the loch side with (1) 13″ sauger (1) 12.5-13″ crappie (1) 16″ sheephead and (1) 19″ channel cat. I missed an aditional 3 fish that had some size to them not sure what they were.

Very Very nice day on the water but there was one heck of a crowed minimum 500 boats between the Red Wing bridge and dam 3.

All in all I got the boat in the water and had a good time, but the fish did not show to be in good numbers, I only saw a handfull of fish boated and most were large crappies.

Water temps were from 39.1 – 43.3 depending where you were, the loch side was the warmest
