Pool 4 Mississippi River, Red WIng MN 12-01-03

The walleye and sauger fishing on Pool 4 has been on a continuous upswing for a couple weeks now. The fish are showing up in massive numbers and the size is there as well. The hot bite we have all been waiting for so long for is now here….better late than never!

This first picture is of a limit of nice 16-19 inch fish I caught just before going home for Thanksgiving. (The family sure enjoyed them!). All these fish were caught doing the shallow water K-Grub pitchin thing at the dam. All these fish fell to either a "smoke" or "firecracker" K-Grub on a H2O precision Jig. The walleyes can be found on almost any of the rock shorelines right now during the mornings and evenings….and some during the cloudy days. When the sun peeks out, the shallow water bite is almost nonexistent. I have been using K-Grubs because of personal preference, but there have been many walleyes/sauger caught using this same method with ringworms!

The vertical jig bite is also going strong right now! I had the chance to jump in the boat with my good buddy "bucktail wayne" last week and do some jiggin. We were not let down by the numerous sauger willing to hammer our plastics. Ringworms and bass assassins were the best bait going for us that day. I did not try the doos, as I didn’t bring them with me! (oops). From what I have been hearing, the doos are on fire right now! The fish were in that 18-25 foot range. They wanted the plastic just hovered in place without any movement. There was no question when they hit! I hadn’t vertical jigged all year because I have fell in love with pitchin jigs, but I had a blast the way they were just inhaling those plastics!
