Brown Trout and Steelhead Ice and Open water

Well the fishing has been either good or bad both in the boat and on the ice for the big trout as of late. I’ve been out just about everyday for a while and although were not getting skunked on the slow days on the ice it’s just a couple of fish. I’ve been fishing in the Milwaukee harbor, Mckinnely Marina and summerfest lagoon. Jigs with gulp, or jigging spoons along with skein and spawn have been working well.

Walleye migrate up near the warm water to feed on shad and they can be fun to catch as well with an occasional Pig! Typically jigging and casting cranks is the ticket.

Winter carp fishing here is not common but a blast to do…the water temps are in the mid 50’s-60 degree’s and the fish fight like crazy!! Usually do this 1-2 times a year for fun!

Sorry for not keeping up but it’s been crazy busy with the transition from open water to ice fishing back and forth everyday and very few days off, so I apologize for not posting more often. I’m still trying to catch up with fishing reports and video’s on my site.

  1. I just watched pretty much all your videos. All I can say is I’m green with envy. I was really hoping to plan a trip out there, but now I’m confused about what time of year and which fish and method to choose. Big walleyes on jigs…Browns, ice or open water….Heck, even big carp.

  2. Awesome report Eric!
From huge browns to beautifully marked steelies, its always fun checking out the pictures in your reports.
    (nice walleye & carp also)

  3. Kooty:

How about the scenes where they are fishing open water from the ice. We almost made it last weekend, but the ice pack blew back in and inventory kept me here.

That stealhead with all the red reminds alot of the Kamloop from the North Shore past.

Exactly my thoughts! I have never seen a Steelie with those colors…but Loopers?

We’re darn glad to have you here hanging out with us, steelslr0007! Spread the word… tell your buddies. Unless you want to consistently outfish them. Then mum’s the word about IDO.

  7. Great report Eric. We are talking of making a trip out there soon. Those are some awesome fish. . Will PM you soon and schedule a trip. Maybe ice or open water. Am leaning toward the open water. Talk soon.

  8. AWESOME! I did a trip to Racine with two of my best buddies last March for our spring break, and the fishing was AMAZING! I am going to try my best to get back up there again! Nothing like 3 guys packed into a old Crestliner, absolutely pounding the trout!

    Awesome pics and video Eric!!!
