I decided to hit the Croix this weekend for some great fall jigging. Our plan was to fish deep water points with Super Doos and also jig n minnows combination. We were on the water on Saturday around 9am and hit the first point. Here we found nice saugers holding in 36-50′ of water. Pictured above a picture of my buddie Mike T with a dandy St.Croix sauger, caught on a purple jig and Super Doo. From there we went south of Afton, stoping at various points until we found good concentrations of bait and fish. The next couple of spots yeilded some nice walleyes in the 19-21" range, caught in 40′ of water also on purlpe Super Doos. Saturday, came to a close with a nice 2-man limit of saugers and walleyes.
Sunday, was a little slower for us. Again we started around 9:30am fishing some of the same points. Just like Saturday the fish wanted those Super Doos, in the purple and blue patterns, no fish on the jig and minnow combination. Today we were unable to boat any walleyes nice walleyes, just those dandy saugers. O well, we ended the day with 10 nice saugers. The last picture is one of my buddy Jeremy, with another big sauger.
Thanks boys for spending the day on the water. Good Friends = Good Times.
Just wanted to say one more thing. Fall is BIG bait time on the Croix a long with other waters. These fish are spitting-up 4-6″ shad in the live-well, so go “BIG”. It might look strange but who cares, if it puts nice fish in the boat.
hi Has,
Just for clarification, are you catching fish deeper than 30 feet, that might be alright if you are keeping every fish you catch, but not if you are trying to release these fish. you might watch these fish swim off, but most will prob die. this subject went around a few times last year. The general concensus was fish caught shallower than 30 feet are prob okay, but caught and released deeper than 30 won’t. Jack.
