A variety of species are on a bite on both Menomin and Tainter. I have been splitting my time between the two. looking for both size and numbers.
Tainter has been the best action for walleyes. Lots of smaller fish but enough eater size mixed in to make it worthwhile. Verticle jigging the channel edge has been putting fish in the boat. Fisherflick and Fireball jigs both have been producing. The productive depths range from 17 to 20 ft. A few nice perch can be taken in the same area. The best time is late afternoon. The landing across from Jakes iced up Friday night. I will check it out Tuesday, hopefully the wind and warmer temps cleared it out.
Menomin has been giving up numbers of smaller fish also. It is not as easy filling out if you are looking for eaters. I have not found any of the big girls yet this fall. Jigging any type of structure or drops near the channel will produce fish. Sticking with hair jigs is the best bet. 11 to 16 ft are productive. Good numbers of perch can be found on adjacent flats in 8 to 9 ft of water. Jig and minnow combos are working well. Smaller pike can also be found in these areas
It looked like way to much ice to break through on Sunday morning. A good day to catch up on some boat cleaning. With the warm temps and south wind, most of Menomin was ice free today(Monday). The action today was great. I was targeting pike. Jigs, bait rigs, blade baits all put fish in the boat. Fish adjacent to the deeper holes up river. There are plenty of pike and they taste great. The warmer temps and wind should keep the lake open this week. The landings on the west side are ice free. See you on the water, Don.
