The magic water temp.
nears and the fall bite is in full force.
With the days getting shorter it’s hard to split time between field and water.
The good things is, you can find plenty of action in a short time.
I spent the morning getting the dogs a good workout chasing birds.
By noon I was on the water and shortly after had the first keeper eye boated.
Besides the eyes wacking my offering, the crappie bite is still going strong.
The key is still shallow areas close to the old river channel.
You will find both areas holding fish.
two things in your favor fishing this type of area are- bait fish holding shallow and game fish traveling the channels.
Right now it seems any presentation with a jig will work.
I caught fish dragging, pitching and going vertical.
The fish are on the feed so don’t be afraid of upsizing.
depending on the wind, I have been using 1/4 and 3/8 ounce fireballs and hair jigs.
Parrot and red have been two of my better colors.
The time is now to enjoy the fall bite and the fish are cooperating.
have fun and I will see you on the water.
Thanks to Woody for taking the pics.
48 degree water temp eh?
Great report Don, Sounds like you got into some good fish! Hope to get out there later this afternoon or sometime soon
Soon as the wind slows down I’ll be out there this week.
Good report.

Great Report
Well I ended up getting out today from 3:30 till dark. The wind made it a real bugger to get any amount of ‘real’ fishing done. I spent more time running my boat around trying to find a spot out of the wind. I fished all over the lake from under the bridge by the dam to the north end up under 94’. Again focusing on any drop that went from 9 to 13-16fow.
Overall today was slower when it came to numbers of fish only boating around half a dozen walleyes and 3 accidental crappies. The good thing is that most the fish I caught HAMMERED the bait! I even caught 1 small eye pitching a ringworm tight against a shoreline…
All the crappies I got were 10”-12” and most the walleyes were short except a 16.5” and one that was just a hair short of the 24” mark.

Nice fish!
Pete,
Both you and the fish look cold.

I couldn’t agree more
