Lake of The Woods Fishing

On a whim a couple buddies and I hooked the boat up and headed north for a couple days of fishing LOW. This time of the year the shiners can be thick in the river. To our suprise when we got there, there wasn’t as many as I had expected.

We spent the first trolling the weed edges of the river for pike. The river has a 30-40" proteced slot, and thats where most of our fish came. The biggest taped at 38". These fish are incredibly thick and aggressive. 9′ with a long silver crankbait that got near the bottom was the best.

On the second day we decided to chase walleyes. We grabbed some shiners and decided to hit the big water. We ran out throug the gap and anchored up in 26′ away from other boats. The color of jig seemed like it didn’t matter, but a long shank jig rigged by hooking the minnow in the mouth, out the gill, than through the side was best. The fish seemed to just "be there" and weren’t going to rip the rod from you by any means. By noon we had boated a limit of keeper walleyes, minus 1 (in case that piggie hit), a few slot fish, 3 sumo perch, and a few keeper saguer and lots of small ones.

We went in and I cleaned up a couple for a fresh shore lunch and were back at it looking for the big one. We put out the trolling rods with deep Tail dancers and went to town. We didn’t get as many fish, but averaged 23" with the biggest 27". There were some huge pods of fish out there and trolling figure 8’s over them was awesome.

This thime of the year rates are dirt cheap and a charter boat isn’t needed if you have your own. There were fish in the river, we just decided to go big lake. You can also duck, goose or grouse hunt and make it a great vacation!

I love fishing both walleyes and bass. For walleyes I spend most of my time guiding on Mille Lacs. For bass I spend a ton of time on Minnetonka, but I cover most of the greater Minneapolis/St Paul Full Bio ›

  1. Man that looks like fun, speaking of gas- It seems to be dropping 5-10 cents every few days! Certainly makes trips up to LOTW more tempting…
