So great to be back on the water, especially Mille Lacs.
After doing the fall night bite for a dozen years, once again, the lake was good to us.
This trip was a special one for me specifically. This was the year I got to break my pal Al’s cherry on the full moon night trolling. Al and I have been fishing for years, but after a lot of arm twisting and quite a few days this year trolling walleyes on Pepin, I finally convinced him of the trophys to be found on the pond!
This year, the lake is “behind” mother natures schedule. Water temps are mid-50s, which makes your normal husky jerk or floating rapala not quite so appealing to these fish. They were looking for a more aggressive bait. Rumors of #9 shallow shad raps proved to be the ticket for many fish accounted for. Don’t get hung up on colors to much, bright colors as well as dull colors will put fish in the boat.
Speed wasn’t quite too critical. Ranging from 1.5 to 2.2mph, but location and boat control is critical. Folks trolling straight lines, locked at 10fow caught fish few and far between. Focus on your structure and troll it correctly. Sometimes that depth is 6fow, sometimes it is 12fow.
Last thing is be considerate to other boaters. Plenty of room, where you don’t need to cut in front of others, or run accross other guys baits. All that does is suck up 150 of spiderwire stealth into your prop seal and the other boat looses one of its favorite fall Mille Lacs baits.
Nicccccccccccccce!
Great report, I’ll be up there on Saturday night.
