Pool 2 Walleye fishing report. 10-5-08

You couldn’t ask for much better weather to fish in than these last few days. Light winds, cool temps and plenty of sunshine. This was just what I needed to get me back into looking for walleyes on pool 2 of the Mississippi. Wasn’t sure of what the action was going to be like rite now with the current water temps still being a little high and the flow being way down. None the less with these types of weather conditions its hard to have a bad fishing trip.

Friday found TBO and myself heading down to the lower end of the pool to check some areas to see if the shad where moving out of the back water yet. We started out pitching a long stretch of shoreline just down stream of a back water lake that had a little current on it and a nice deeper cut along the shoreline. There was plenty of bait fish in this area but few hungry walleyes to take our offerings. Maybe in the weeks to come with dropping water temps this will be a place to check back on.

Saturday was another beautiful day and Drewsdad was able to jump in the boat with me that afternoon. We decided to stay a little closer to the landings that day and work some of the wing dams in the area. Pitching a variety of BfishN tackle plastics and hair jigs was the main approach with even a few crank baits thrown in. It didnt take long to find some active walleyes feeding on the tips of the wingdams and down in front of them. Slowly working 1/8 and 3/16 ounce jigs from the tops of the dams down the front sides and out towards the tips was key for finding these fish. Joel also did a good job is showing me that a crank bait needs to be throw at these spots to just in case there’s a fish in there that doesn’t want a jig.

We didn’t find any large numbers of walleyes feeding on the wing dams yesterday. It was more of a one here one there type of bite. This wasn’t to bad as we had a fair number of spot to hit. Even checking back on spots put a few more fish in the boat. With a few jumbo white bass and sheep heads mixed in it was a nice relaxing afternoon of pitching wing dams with a good of fish to keep it interesting.

Its always good to run into familiar faces out on the water. I always seem to see someone down there from IDO just about every trip out. For those of you that havent heard yet Moore’s Bait and Tackle is having another CPR walleye contest on sunday the 12th on pool 2. This will be another good chance to put some face with some names from IDO.

Good luck to you guys that are still getting out.

  1. Nice, Mike! I’m going to head out there for a couple hours this afternoon to see what’s happening. Glad there are at least a few fish biting.

Oh, and since when were there 12″ walleyes in P2?

Thats why we took a photo of it. Just dont see many of them.

  3. Thanks for taking me out again Mike! It seems that the only consistent thing yesterday for me was to have some chartreuse and orange on the lures. Hairjigs, plastics and cranks all took fish. And Marty and his crew were hitting some of the wingdams we were on after us and pulling fish off of them as well. So the action seems to be improving!

  4. Nice report, Mike. We were down Saturday AM for a few hours. Put 4 fish in the boat with the biggest being a 27 incher that hit a crank. Things are shaping up nicely. Just need a little more flow to get them going!

You oughta see how Brutus treats perch!

Hey JJ, nice fish….I found your rain gear bag in my truck.

  6. Nice report Mike, glad to see you’re out there enjoying yourself. Those were some nice pictures to go along with the story, hope they are still biting when I get down there later this week.

  7. Good report Mike. Great seeing you and Drewsdad out on the water Saturday.

I had my father and my father-in-law in the boat with me. We had seen Griz jigging on Thursday and decided to vertical jig fatheads for awhile on the front faces and inside pockets of wingdams and shallow shoreline areas.

    Nothing but sheepies though.

We switched up to hairjigs and paddletails after running into you guys and began connecting right away. Thanks Mike and DD!!! My father-in-law stuck a personal best 25″ walleye on a 3/16 oz BFN jig with a firecracker/chartreuse tail off the tip of a wingdam. We had several more in the eater size range to round out the day. The bite seems to be picking up a notch. As Mike said, some more flow would help things out a lot.

  8. Looks like a good amount of rain covering a large part of the state today. Maybe this will raise the river a little. Way to go on your in laws PB.
