Mississippi River Walleye Fishing Report 10-02-08

After a long hiatus from the mighty river, I was able to make it out a few times in the last couple of weeks. The walleye bite for my boat has been slow, not one presentation has consistently put fish in the boat for me on the last few trips. This bite is typical for a warm weather low water early Fall.

I have heard reports of some decent catches coming to the boat trolling crank baits, or 3-way rigging live bait. This bite has been very day to day as well. Most of these walleyes are short or in the eater class under the 20” mark. I have been utilizing my time on the water trying to attack some of those bigger walleyes that get schooled up in certain areas during this time frame with little to show for my efforts .

Several baits have put a few walleye in the boat, although, none of them have religiously put the hurt on um! The baits that have put walleye in the boat for me are pro-blue paddle tails on black precision heads, purple chartreuse tail ring worms on chartreuse/orange precision heads, patriot colored hair jigs, and fire tiger Shad Raps. I have been focusing all of my efforts in less than 8’ of water in hopes of encountering active walleye gorging themselves on baitfish in the shallower water. Since it’s been so warm, the bigger fish just aren’t there yet .

Now that the cooler temps have set in, the water temps will start cooling and get those walleye back on the chew. Your typical Fall presentations will emerge soon. Look for the walleye and sauger bite to keep getting better over the course of the next week. Crank baits, hair jigs, plastics will all have their glory at one time or another over the next couple of weeks. Don’t be afraid of the bait if you just want to catch some fish. Minnows rigged on a 3-way, or plain hook and split shot rig, have a small window for a few days in the Fall where they will out produce just about any other presentation. Don’t forget about the crawlers if you can find them, they can be deadly as well at times.

I’ll see ya’ on the river!

When not at work I'm busy playing fishing guide on pools 3 and 4 of the Mississippi River.I will fish Lake Pepin but the bite has to be really good on the lake to get me off of moving water.

  1. Great report Dustin! It is nice to hear or see reports that are just that! Good bite or bad! I think we all know that the good bite is not far away. Your report will be looked back on as the “Beginning!”

  2. Great report, as usual, sir! I thinks them shads should be starting to shiver now with these cooler temps. I’m thinking that I might be checking out some areas on P2 tomorrow to test out some ideas.
