Rainy Lake Minnesota walleye fishing report

As September comes to a close I’d like to a moment to thank customers for a week of memorable trips while landing Monster Rainy Lake walleyes. Big girls were showing up quite frequently for a little photo fest (Smile your on IDO!!!). Many “Girthy Gals” were found on the edges this week. We worked the graph hard, and carefully combed breaklines for big fish. Electronics 101 has many fisherman finding fish, Advanced Electronics usage will have anglers finding fish on good holding structure, but you can earn your Electronics Masters when you are able to pinpoint the whereabouts of the biggest baddest beasts. Sometimes they take the reigns declaring “Queen of the Mountain” when they are actively feeding, but with the instability of our weather patterns this week more often than not they were hiding out in nearby locations. We soaked our H2O’s in front of these Monsters and seemingly coaxed weather induced inactive fish to come aboard the Daze Fish Casket!!

Often times people ask when is the BEST time to come to Rainy Lake. Great question!! I’d say from May til January!!! Really I don’t know if there is a good answer to that question. Each month has fish in different patterns, and actually contrary to popular belief the fish do eat each and every month. I love placing umbrellas in our coconut drinks at the mid-summer Daze shorelunches, but fall…. Well it’s FALL!!! Geese are migrating, Vikings are losing, and the Twins are hoping someone will help them get into the post season. Cool weather keeps fair weather anglers under the blankets cursing officiating, while big fish bring some avid fisherman to Borderland. If you want big fish you need to put in quality time on the quality water. If you do this with some consistency even a blind squirrel will find a nut every once in awhile! Now if you couple this with some emphasis on hunting for big fish you may get your PB this year!!

October fest on Rainy is only days away, and one can only imagine the beasts that will break the surface this month. Day in and day out we play the hand we’re dealt with, and if we get some good old fashioned NICE WEATHER look out!! We’ve got the big fish nailed down, and nice weather will greatly increase there movement. Right now we’re moving to them, but when these fish are on the bite is becomes much easier to cross paths on big fish spots. Note to walleyes… FYI We know where you are…. Be very very Careful!!! LOL!!!

We’ve been pitching jigs over varying depths tipped with minnows. I haven’t upsized our minnows as of yet due to some inclimate weather, but expect we’ll be utilizing some bigger baits very soon. Colors haven’t seemed nearly as important as locations in the past few days. With that being said you will rarely see us slinging anything other than firetiger patterns or gold. Deep clay/boulder transitions have been beautiful this week. Perch are full of some sort of bug coming out of the mud…. SOOOO!! Yep walleyes are nearby!! That is your tip of the week right there!! Find baitfish and land your trophies!! We’ve got some openings in October….. so call in sick, take a break, quit your job… Whatever!! Tell your wife your heading North to put some meat on the table or renew your wedding vows with a trip to Rainy Lake!! There you go!! The big fish of the northwoods await you. From the Land of Big Fish and small crowds!! Blowing hard from the Border!!

  1. I’ll be there in 6 days, buddy! I see some colder weather in the forecast headed our way. Which is more than welcomed as I’m ready for Snosuit weather!

Bigger minnows?! How about some bigger plastics? Have you been sticking to meat or having you been mixing in the fake baits with any success?

And… thanks for the report. It was an excellent read as always.

  2. I look forward to it as well Buddy!! I’ve been slinging H20’s with minnows. I’ve been looking to start big plastics, but our weather has been so unstable we’ve been forced to tone things down. Actually I haven’t even upsized our baits as of yet. Sooooo…. It should only get better when we can effectively utilize bigger presentations, and a big K Grub or natural colored Ringies/Paddletails will likely become very effective. That will make long distance casting much easier!!! Here are some more pics from the past week!! Show stoppers!!
    Congratulations Team!!
