Rainy Lake, Minnesota Fishing report 9-18-08

Time to put the remote down, and stop playing arm chair walleye fisherman. The Vikes are likely adding too much stress to your already hectic lifestyle, and the coaching staff will still probably pull the greatest Running Back in the NFL out on 3rd downs for some highly strategic plan we soon will understand. Sooooo….,. Come to Rainy Lake and put the hammer down on some of the big girls!! WOW!! Really the only thing our groups have had to contend with is the wind at times. If we are afforded the ability to stay mobile in the wind we are really knocking down trophy fish. With the Crappie bite being so hot I have taken countless trips after the big Rainy Lake slabbers. Several 15 inch fish have been boated, and many people will have a new addition to their wall of trophies.

Though the Slabs have been a big focus for our groups don’t think for a second the Fall Football walleyes have escaped the Daze Fish Casket! Big walleyes are as hungry as a guy in sweatpants at an all you can eat buffett. We’ve been zeroed on these Gi-Normous fish by throwing bullseyes with our H20 jigs. Catching a nice limit of crappies and then pulling some monster walleyes makes for a nice day on the water. If we had some more daylight I’d be tempted to chase some feathered friends too….Hmnnn…. I’ve focused our walleye efforts on deep humps or deep pockets of shallow locations. As always we have a few different bites taking place for walleyes. Deep, Shallow and Current walleye action is taking place with numbers of big fish being turned when the locations are pinpointed. Some of our Trophy walleyes this week have come in 15 f.o.w., while some have come in 40.

One of the greatest things about fall is that the fish tend to run BIG, and often times fish of all species start relating to the same structure which makes multi-species fishing a blast. Many of our trips have had customers hitting for the fishing cycle catching Walleye, Crappie, Pike, and Jumbo perch in close proximity of one another. Some of those Rainy Lake Gators James and I had fun with this spring are once again showing themselves. I’m not a big fan of hammer handles, but when the Girthy Gators are devouring everything my interest level greatly increases. Although during this week we haven’t exclusively targeted these pike some true trophies have been posing for a Daze photo shoot. FYI there have been many mysterous round bulges in the bellies of these pike…. Hmnnnnn. Turtles? Probably not!

Traffic on the lake is decreasing with each leaf hitting the trail. Feathered friends have taken a few boats off the water alluring many of our local fisherman, while kids getting smarter has ended several family vacations north for the year. This time of year your typically left with fisherman seeking trophies, and there has been no shortage of action. If I could perform some sort of a dance to extend fall for 4 or 5 months I certainly would look into it. I’ve tried in the past with limited success. This year many groups have found themselves directly in the center of some fantastic fishing, and it will only get better until many slip on some orange chasing the thirty pointer at deer camp! Treat yourself to a day on Rainy THIS fall! Catching is still way more fun than fishing, so stop kidding yourself! See ya on the water! We’ll be the guys with the net out! Oh FYI my net landing net is pretty much wore out, and not only from pushing the Lund Fish Casket out of the rocks! LOL!!!
