SE Minnesota Lake Zumbro Multispieces Fishing

Southeastern Minnesota’s Lake Zumbro is probably best know for and fished for its panfish. But the lake offers alot more spieces of fish for anglers to satisfy the itch for being on the water catching fish. Read on to catch a glimps of a couple other spieces that are available to the anglers in this region.

The first photo shows what is probably the most sought after fish in the lake. Pictured is Mike Sass holding a couple crappies caught while sharing a boat with me on the lake.

The 2nd photo is Mike with a bass that he caught. Bass fishing is becoming more popular every year it seems. The turn out for the Tuesday night bass tournaments held on Lake Zumbro has been very successful this year with nice turnouts of anglers and fish being caught. This has become possible because these guys really do a great job of caring for and releasing of the fish they catch.

The 3rd photo has a fish in it that alot of people don’t think of when it comes to Lake Zumbro but there are some nice ones in the lake. I’m not saying big ones, but ones that will make you smile when they are on the end of your line giving you that tug that you have been craving for all week. Many know that the DNR has been putting muskys in the lake for awhile now but the lake, according to what I have heard, is being managed for catfish also. I can remember being out at Hooked On Fishing in Rochester one Saturday and in walked 3 anglers from Iowa. They had driven 3 hours to come up here just to catch catfish on Lake Zumbro. They said that they had been coming up here for years to fish for cats. Its a great catfish fishery they said. And as long as we keep releasing them it will stay that way too. This all goes to show that there are many different kinds of fish that anglers can fish for. And they can all be caught on different kinds of lures and also on the same kind of lure too. These were all caught slow trolling a small jig with plastic on it called a Mini-mite jig. Adjusting where the jig was in the water column while moving it forward with an electric trolling motor placed the lure in the ”fish zone” where each fish hungout. As always, please use catch and release/selective harvest and you will enjoy many years of good fishing and so will your kids and grandkids. Thanks for sharing my boat with me on this evening Mike. It was fun.
Thanks, Bill
