H20 Precision Jigs on Rainy Lake, Minnesota

OK!! As promised I am going to explain why these H20 jigs have a spot in my tool box of tricks on my guide boat. Everyone has a confidence fishing technique whether it be bait selection or tackle. For me it is jig fishing. When the going gets tough I can most always count on putting fish in the livewell for shorelunch with a jig. With that being said there is a huge difference in the performance of jigs on the water. When I’m fishing a jig and minnow for example I will run the hook through the gills and then up the back of the minnow. Slightly bending the minnow while hooking it up to reach as far back onto the minnow as possible. It is important the minnow lay flat and not bent when it is hooked up.

In the past I have had plenty of success with other jigs on the market, but have noticed during a tough bite or short bite that I would have a tough time hooking up on fish. I don’t like to use stinger hooks as I have found them to be effective when getting bit, but getting significantly less bites with the extra baggage on the presentation. With these H20’s there is a nice wide gap lending itself to maximum room for hook ups, and the long shank allows me to get that hook farther back into the minnow for those skin strippers. If you aren’t getting that hook far back into that minnow you will no doubt miss a lot of fish. Nope not when they are inhaling the jigs, but on bites we are experiencing now with the mayflies every fraction of an inch counts.

As you will notice the sloping of the body of the jig head, and then no collar is fantastic for plastics. My guess would be they were originally designed with plastics in mind, and maybe accidentally produced the most versatile jig on the market today. Most other jigs with bait keepers have a thick collar that wears down your plastics, and the bait keeper is not nearly as effective as the sharp wire that sticks out and pokes either the minnow, night crawler or plastics you are using. As for night crawlers these jigs rock as you can feather the crawler on, and then stick that metal keeper right into the crawler. Normally I wouldn’t spend as much time talking about tackle, but I think that it is very worthwhile to take a look at these jigs. The other nice thing is that they are available in many in between sizes so you can perfectly match up the weight of your jig with the conditions you are fishing. There are few jigs available that come in a light weight that are still coupled with a big hook. Old school philosophy was to down size the hook in increments as the weight of the jig was decreased. Anglers these days understand that slow fall rates allow your bait to stay in the optimum strike zone longer thus triggering more strikes. The last thing in the world you want is to trigger that trophy to hit, and then have a wimpy hook bend out….GRRRRRRRR!

All in all I think it is worth your while to have a multi-purpose piece of tackle in your boat. I switch from minnows to crawlers to plastics all without tying up different jigs. Oh and no need honing these babies as they are sharp out of the package. Make no question about it that sharp hooks are vital to hooking fish. I still see many jig fisherman casting with mono, and when your a long ways away from the boat fishing mono with a dull jig GOOD LUCK!!! You will have a very very very difficult time putting the BEANS to a big hard jawed walleye or Pike. Many people fail to realize the impact of the stretching of the line over a long distance. I personally love the paint jobs they are putting out. Orange/chartruesse in a tiger pattern is Lights out!!!…………Rumor has it!! Good Fishing! Just thought I’d give you a heads up as though they have been a long time favorite down south they have just started to take hold here in the North, and the walleyes are in trouble!!!

  1. Rainydaze, The H2O jigs work great for hooking minnows the way you do. I have been doing the same thing when I fish shinners. It work great if you are snap-jiggin. Not to mention some time you can catch multiple fish on the same minnow. Jig style is a huge factor when hooking a minnow this way. A wide gap hook is need if you are using a good size minnow. I also like to use Lindy Maxy Gap jigs for snap-jiggin. Nice report and Great job explaining the way to go about hooking the minnows and how important it is.
    Wallster ><((((>

  2. Great report RD!!

Ya ever try 10/2 Powerpro while jig fishing? I use it and just love it!!!

You sure have it right on the H20 jigs from BFT Co.!!!!
    sharp hooks!!

  3. Hey Bob,

You and I are on the same page buddy. I use 10/2 powerpro in the red color. Very Very nice line. Unbelievably smooth casting!!! Best of the Best as far as I’m concerned. I also use the Powerpro ice for hardwater. Awesome stuff!!!

  4. Thanks for a great informative read RD

No reason that wouldn’t work here on pool 8 through the ice even on them days they are just nipping at jig n raps

  5. Hey Brett,

During the early season we use jigs a lot through the ice for walleyes and Pike. Later on we tend to move towards jigging spoons…

  6. When we use half crawlers on jigs…the H20 cannot be beat! Great on lakes and great on the River down here too! That keeper holds crawlers perfectly! Something you cannot do with standard jig hooks.
    Great report!!!

  7. Hey Tuckner,

Right on!! We were limited out in the first 1 1/2 hours today with the H20/crawler or leech combo. I prefer if using the crawlers on jigs to go 1/3 even. We’ve got lights out fishing right now!!!

  8. Awesome!
We gota work on Mr. Koonce to make us up a live bait shorter shank wide gap with the keeper for leech pitching and jigging. I think that would absolutely ROCK!

  9. rainydaze:

one last thing that I like… if you need to get the bait keeper out of the way is with a side cutters bend it of the way and give ‘er a clip. Now you have the perfect jig. When I am threading minnows on, I like this approach a little better.

  10. Hey Mark,

I’m sure we all have our own personal preferences, but I really like the baitkeeper sticking in the minnows mouth for one more holding spot. To me when fishing jig and minnow with the through the mouth out the gill and up the back it give to pressure points vs. just the back getting ripped up after a few casts… For me it also keeps everything in optimum position for a few more casts (Assuming we aren’t getting Drilled by another bruiser! LOL!)

  11. I think you’ll like the results Mark. I just got a new order of jigs in, and am killing the fish with the orange/chartruesse in the firetiger pattern. Awesome!! Had a group of 3 out today, and we landed 35 walleyes before noon!! Putting the to them!
