A short report this time around, but my buddy Big Mike and I went out Wednesday night for some possible flathead action. Weather wasn’t bad, water looked good, so off we went. Turned out we lost a few baits, just couldn’t get the hook set, and we even lost one hook off 120lb test line. Sure would have liked to seen that one. We did end up getting 3 flatheads in, including this nice 15 1/2 pounder.
The last flatty was a meager 1 pounder, but the big one for the night was this fat 28 1/2 pounder that went 38 1/2" long. I kicked myself after I realized I forgot to measure the girth.
All 3 were caught on bullheads, and as usual, all were released in perfect health, and I would encourage you to do the same.
Thursday night we planned on hitting it hard again, but the weather was just ferocious. Luckily, we were in an area where we could actually see out of the canal and see what was coming from the west. We got the boat on the trailer just in time before the destructive wind and tons of rain (like we need anymore of that right now) hit us.
Before we were chased off the water, we visited with a guy who fishes a certain area quite often, and was probably the source of all my flathead dreams I had last night after getting home after a very long day. If what he says is true, and judging by his set ups and how he talked, I don’t think he was lying, he has been kicking our tails a little bit. He stated that a few weeks back he landed a 73 pounder, and has 73 flats over 15 pounds (the minimum poundage needed for Nebraska Master Angler award) this year alone. I’ve been thinking about doing exactly what this guy was doing for quite some time, which is a different system than what we use, so I think I may have to get out and give it a try. See you on the water!
Great job Brian. Sounds like we may be getting a few more flathead reports soon.
Hey Brian, looks like it was a pretty good outing. Is that the “new” boat you were fishing out of ?
Ben, you are correct….I’m going to be thinking flatheads all week at work. I’ve got a plan I’m hatching, so hopefully it’ll pay off.
And TD, yup, it is the ‘new’ boat! I went ahead and got it. Works pretty well, Merc runs great. I think it’ll work perfect for what I do around here.
Here’s to more flatties!
Hey B! It feels good to see and feel that rod bend again isn’t it?!
I’ll be waiting with bullhead breath (baited breath) to hear about the new system.
One of these days your going to have to fill me in on the techniques you use for those flatty’s. We’ve caught a 33 and a 44 lb. using roadrunners for crappie, but I can never catch them when I actually try for them.
Nice report Mate!
Great pics… sorry to hear bout the weather…
can make thing tough..
Keep us posted on how you do through the season..
Nice report and congrats on the well-done NEBRASKALAND article. I jugged those canals with friends as a kid and haven’t been on them since. Good call on protecting the resource also.

Thanks Todd! I thought it was fun making the article, myself. Hope to hit it again this next week and haul a few more into the boat for CPR.
NICE CATS!!
