Walleyes in rising water on Rainy Lake
With a steady flow of cold fronts, brutal winds, and rain that triggers the animals to start pairing up we’re STILL boating nice walleyes. It sure was nice to see the sun today for my Southern Minnesota Boys! This week my groups have been focusing our energies on Rock piles with feeding shoals or gradual slopes to deeper water. These Rock piles we’ve been focusing on are in close proximity or connected to shorelines. Of course the shorelines with the wind howling into them have been predominately pinpointed.
We’ve been working these rock piles by casting Precision H20 jigs in a 1/8 to 1/4 oz tipped with a minnow. Chartruesse and Orange have been working for us. I like using the Precision jigs as the plastic keeper works equally well for keeping my minnow in position if I’m using live bait.
As always I like to skip around this time of year, so after we’ve worked the rock pile patterns we change gears and go after either current/neck down areas or wind blown bays with deeper holes during low light periods. Our sole focus for this move is for big fish. When arriving to these ares we are seeking the deepest hole in the area, and either pitching jigs or ripping perch imitations over top of them.
As the sun decides to come out for more than 5 minutes the fish are more and more willing to attack your presentations. Fishing is going to be hot in the coming weeks, so get on these patterns!!! Oh yeah….. Don’t forget your digital camera!
Thanks for the report…leaving tomorrow a.m. for Rainy. Headed to Kettle Falls Hotel!!!
That is one thing we never seem to get, big walleyes. When I say big, I mean over 24″….tons and tons of 23″ and below. I’m not complaining….it’s funny when your catching those size fish, then everyone gets more excited when you catch a slot fish.
We leave Thursday and if I wasn’t already anxious enough…Looks like a good stretch of weather coming too…
Nice fish! I came back Sunday after being up for 4 days and I think it didn’t rain or blow 30mph for only 4 hours. First thing I did when I got back was order side curtains for my Ranger. Nice for 30 min. rain for 45, repeat. Did get a 27″ pitchin plastics in 4′ of water like you mentioned plus a bunch of male smallies. Looks like a nice weather pattern coming, whish I was back.
