The fishing on Mille Lacs has not been what I would expect for this second week in June. The lake temperature has just reached the 60 degree mark! However the walleye fishing has not been as good as one would expect. Normally when the calendar turns to June, you kind of start to make some changes with your presentation. Well one change for me is to start pulling blades! The walleye blade bite has not taken off as one would expect. I have caught a few, but not any great numbers yet. Lindy Rigging leeches with 8 ft long snells continues to put a few walleye in the boat! While on the other hand the smallmouth fishing has taken off pretty well!
During the last week I have switched over to the smallmouth action. I have had my customers catch some real dandy fish, some near the 4 1/2 to 5lb mark!! Its just a blast to have someone hook into one of these smallies!! Pound for pound they are one strong fish!! Even the 15 inchers are fun catching! The smallies that I have been targeting have been in the shallow rocks in 2-5 fow. I have not caught big numbers, but the quality of fish has been there. Along with the smallies in the shallows have been a few walleyes also!!! I have had two walleyes caught on Chartreuse 4" ringworms in the last couple of days!! One was a 26 1/2 walleye caught in 4 fow. Gold Shine K-grubs have also been catching some smallies rigged on a BFT H2O Precision Jigs in 3/32 oz sizes. I would expect the smallmouth action to continue to provide some action in my boat. Hopefully it won’t be the only action and the walleye bite picks up!!
We have had our first and second bug hatches on the lake! Some of the last few days have been difficult during the light winds! Your clothes, boat, and whatever else you might have along will need some care once off the water. They say that you can tell how healthy a lake is by the quality of its bug hatches…..well I think Mille Lacs scores a ten!!!
In summary I would put it this way!!! The smallie action is going real well. The walleye bite is off compared to a year ago at this time. Once we get through these bug hatches we will see what kind of a bite the lake will provide for us. Right now I’m blaming the slow bite on the feed that is currently out in the lake. If you are planning a trip to Mille Lacs, don’t forget about the great smallmouth action this lake can offer you! Its something you really need to try sometime!!!
A few more pics!!!
Beautiful fish Bobber! I’m wishing I was up there right now.
Nice fish
Love those smallies, Bob! Four more weeks and I’ll be sharing your rock pile!
Good report Bobber! It’s truly an amazing fishery isn’t it? How many lakes can you fish and have the opportunity to catch trophy sized walleyes, bass and muskies all in the same day.
Great report and Great fish. Been a long time since I was on the pond but sure thinking I need to find my way back there.
Thanks for sharing!
Nice fish and report Bobber! I think I recognize the point in the background on a few of those pics. Don’t worry I won’t tell anyone.
HaHa..Wade, If you look close enough in one of the pic’s you can see a bouy marker!!! And its one that you have spent some time fishing around forsure!!!!
When my guide customer Roger hooked into that 26 1/2 walleye…..my front of the boat bumped into a big red bouy marker!!! I just wonder how many of you guys might know where that ones at???
There’s a big red bouy on Mille Lacs
Great report Bobber
