Mississippi River Walleye Fishing Report 6-08-08

The walleye on the mighty river have been quite cooperative. I had the chance to spend some time on the river every day over the past week with some very successful days .

My two best presentations over this past week for 24”plus walleye were anchoring and casting jigs tipped with bait or slowly 3-waying bait up river on small current seams. My best numbers presentation has been dragging jigs with bait or trolling crank baits. My best trolling speeds have been in the 1.7mph to 2.2mph. Trolling in less than 7’ of water has been best for me in the areas I have been targeting with 2‘-5’ being the most productive for the low to mid 20inch fish. Firetiger and orange craw shad raps have been best for me. #5’s and #7 have all taken some nice walleye.

The water levels are projected to rise almost 3’ in the next week. Their projections are usually forecast higher than what the actual turns out to be. Either way, expect fish to be on the move daily right now. With the higher stage and flows, 3-way rigging bait, or casting jigs, is a good bet to catch some of those bigger walleye that are hanging tight to small current breaks. Trolling cranks in areas with lots of sand dunes or tight to shore out of the main force of the current flow is going to be your best bet. If targeting the trolling bite.

I would like to thank all the groups that fished with me again last week. I had a great time with all of you and am looking forward to fishing with you again. Every trip I had last week was a success one way or another. Some days mother nature made it a bit harder to play the game but we were still able to persevere and put some walleyes in the boat.

I do believe that the best is yet to come on the mighty river. I’ll see ya on the river!

When not at work I'm busy playing fishing guide on pools 3 and 4 of the Mississippi River.I will fish Lake Pepin but the bite has to be really good on the lake to get me off of moving water.

  1. Nice job Dustin. The river sure has dirtied up lately, hasn’t it I guess I better get out the trolling gear and hit the lake!

  2. Great report and as usual beautiful fish!!

my dad is also doing well on Mississippi River backwaters dragging jigs tipped with bait. He’s using a 1/4 oz orange head with a kalins 2″ yellow dog tail. he tips it with either a half of a crawler or a minnow.

  3. Hey Dustin-

great report! Do you by any chance know my good friend and long time fishing buddy Ryan Kayle?? I thought he had mentioned once that you are from Charles City origianlly. Anyway, it’s a pleasure reading your reports

  4. Goodness Dustin! It’s not even a fair fight any more! Those walleye just roll over for you, buddy. Great work as always!

It was great fishing with you again Tim. We have always had a good time with some very interesting things happening on our outings .No misplaced hooks this time but we all learned a thing or two didn’t we ?

Tell Tom thanks again as well .

  7. Thanks Eric! Hope to see you on this end soon .

Has the bite on your end kept going for you? I do know you were hogging um out for a while there .

Might see you this weekend if you are around. Just have to keep on the down low so the Lyons family doesn’t know we are around . Those hill people always seem to corrupt other campers

  8. Great report Dustin and congratulations to all of the anglers above!

Those darn hill people I tell you.
It has been fairly consistant down south. I havent spent as much time down there the last two weeks as I have before, but the times I have been down there it has still been good.

I might make it up there on sunday, not sure yet though. Hopefully I will make it up for the following weekend though.
