Mississippi River Pool 3 Walleye & Sauger Trolling

When you get a weekend as nice as this one, what else can you do other than grab a kid and hit the water? Who am I to argue? My #5 son Aaron had the need to get into some crappies. So yesterday, that was out plan. We hit Lake Rebecca in Hastings. We only had a few hours before a family fish fry, so we did a lot of running and gunning with no fish to show for it. We did see a few nice bass caught, and a nice pike in the 30" range. The oncoming storms got us off the lake, and home in a hurry! We will be back soon to get even with them!

Sunday was another story. Jami Ritter called and wanted to get back on the water and chase around lower Pool 3. It was a no-brainer! (Thanks!!!) The goal was to get Aaron on some fish. He had an itch that needed scratching and Saturday didn’t work out so well…So we went out and hit some high percentage spots and did get on some fish. We found fish relating to wing dams and current breaks and sand flats and clam beds.

As is the norm this time of year, #5 Shad Raps and Frenzies and Minnow Raps in bright colors worked well in the sunlight. The Minnow Raps outproducing all others today. Current is still moving pretty good over wing dams in mid to lower P-3. Fish seem to still be relating to seams yet, and that is just fine with me! I like the hunt and search aspect of it. Depths for us that produced were the 8-10 foot areas. In backwater cuts we ran into temps of 76 degrees! Main channel readings were 10 degrees cooler.

We had quite a bit of debris coming out of the backwaters. This often happens when the water drops and pulls junk off the shore that was pushed up when the water was high. This floating "Junk" tended to follow the current seam, which is right where we wanted to be unfortunately! We worked around it by zig zagging through and around the seam. The slower pace of trolling this way was nice as Jami and I were able to show Aaron why we were doing certain things and explaining to him what we were seeing on the electronics. The sooner he learns this, the sooner I get to ride, and he can drive!!!! Ha-ha!

Pool 3 is in very good shape, with many eater size walleye and sauger available and eager to please!

  1. Thanks for a great report Tuck! So that is what a loaded up trolling rod looks like! I seem to have forgotten. 76 degrees, wow, that’s what I’m seeing down here on the backwaters, only here I can only see down about an inch.
Glad Aaron got to scratch that itch. Nothing better than putting young one’s on fish is there?
