I’m not sure if anything can top flipping small slip bobbers after the Thick Backed Rainy Lake Slabs!!! These fish are in shallow and likely will be dropping spawn soon. We have been really laying the wood to the fish. Fish are averaging 12 inches with the bigger fish up to 15 inches thus far. No doubt about it Rainy Lake boasts 2lb fish.
Rainy is a vast vast fishery. Lots of nice looking cover, and those of you who have spent some time fishing crappies know you can spend better parts of the day searching likely holding spots for these papermouths. Once you find the spot that they are holding you can really have some fun. We’ve been getting most of the fish in about 3 f.o.w.
Yesterday I was out alone, and landed 30 slabs myself from 12-3p.m. Often times as with early season pike I’ve found the best bites coincide with the warmest temps of the day. That works great for the fair weather fisherman. The other thing it works nice for is you can go out and catch some of Rainy’s monster walleyes and smallmouth, and get yourself a nice batch of crappies for a fish fry.
Come on up and lets get out and chase some Rainy Lake Trophies!!! I know this is short and sweet, but there are fish to be caught!!! OH OH OH!!! Bobber Down!!! By the way we have used artificials only on these fish. Makes long casts much easier, and you can catch multiple fish. Much less time goofing around feathering on your crappie minnow when you should be catching fish! 3 to one simply for the efficiency of artificials in this scenario. Shrimpo’s, Flu-Flu’s, Ratso’s, Tubies… You’ll never use crappie minnows again. No Need!!! Did I mention lately you should be up here???! Nothing better than a Rainy Lake Shorelunch with crappies! Gotta Go!
Wow, those are some nice slab crappies.
Wow that looks like a lot of fun. Great report and fish!
