Lake Wissota – Crappies – 5-17-08

“I heard Jason Sullivan lives near Lake Wissota, but I never see a front pager.” Okay, I’m coming out of my Lake Wissota front page report hiding to brag a little about the crappie fishing we enjoy on this fine reservoir. This morning I had the opportunity to do a focused crappie search on Lake Wissota with my co-worker and his family.

We focused our search on the Yellow River arm, which had water temps in the low 60’s. That seemed to be a good temp to find some crappies in the frisky mood. I wasn’t able to find crappies in tight concentrations, but every stop me made there were willing crappies to take our offering. We found them from 10 FOW to a skinny one FOW. I like to target warmer shallow water with woody structure. I realize this is spring crappie fishing 101, but it’s always good to remember the basics.

Our presentations were basic and varied. We caught them vertically with a jig/minnow, pain hook/minnow under float, and with pitched Mini-Mite’s. The highlight for me was to see young Russell revel in cranking in crappies that were net worthy. Size varied from around 10” to 12.5”. This is representative of the “bell curve” of Wissota, but crappies up to 15” are not at all uncommon on this lake.

Now is a great time to take advantage of a good panfish bite on your home water and enjoy these beautiful spring days.

  1. Hunting down specks can as tough as catching walleyes. Way to go it is allways fun to have kids on fish.
