Metro area carp report

Well…. The carp action around the metro has been somewhat slow, but things should improve once we get some steady warmer weather. I was able to get out a couple times recently hitting some favorite early season waters with mixed results. First off we have one of my favorite small stream honey holes that can produce fish in the 20Lb.+ class. Fishing was slow and I broke a $175.00 carp stick on a hookset.. but my pal Greg(AKA Stingler) did lay into two nice fish. The first one pictured going about 15 Lbs. or so. Presentation once again was your typical corn rigged on a number 2 octupus hook, a 12″ or so leader, and a one ounce slipsinker as the current in this area was quite heavy. I don’t know if I’d consider it a high or low note but I did manage about 12 or more Bullheads. HOOOOOWEEEEE!

Next up we have an after work evening stop on Lake Johanna. This fine cold front evening I was joined by Jarrett(AKA St.Croix River) for another slow bite. Jarrett was the lucky winner of one of the Brandon Rolen auctions from last year and due to both of our crazy schedules we were’t able to get together till now for a portion of his trip( more to come in the future). We started off fishing a shallow bay that was loaded with fish last week and of course was void of any life on Thursday…on to spot number two, a large flat with deep water nearby. I knew there would be a few random cruisers utilizing this area. Luckily for Jarrett he managed to find the spot on the spot and landed two decent carp, although I was hoping to put us on many more it wasn’t in the cards for this particular outing. I do want to thank him for supporting such a good cause and to have such a nice guy join me in the boat.

As I stated earlier we can only hope for the bite to improve in the near future. Here’s hopin’??..and in closing a few more pics from last week. Enjoy!

Jarrett? Are you turning from sturgeon?

Sturgeons still hold #1 on my short Rookie list, but I bet if I got a 60″ carp, pound for pound we would have a new #1 in my book.
Also, since our DNR has shortened the Croix Sturgeon season by 6 days out of ONLY 45, a guy has to fill in that void and carp are really fun to play on light gear!

    Jeremy, thanks again!
Fishing was slow, but the two I got fought like champs, and that is why I started fishing, for the battle! Thanks again for making the time and sharing your wealth of fishing knowledge!

Soaking corn on the Croix tonight, I’ll let ya know how she goes

  2. My suckiness doesn’t end at the rod. On Sunday I threw my digital camera in a bag with a tupperware container of corn mixed with a bunch of sugar. This concoction leaked and totaled my camera as well. Took it apart and the entire insides are a sticky mess of goo! Maybe, just maybe, some rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip might bring it back to life.
