Despite eroneous media reports of the lake being iced over, those who ventured out for the opener on Lake Winnie were treated to a post spawn bite that was second to none!
Reports of groups catching 30+ Walleyes were not uncommon and several of our guests said it was some of the best fishing they had ever experienced.
The water was a little cold for the smaller fish to be really active, but the 20"+ fish had the ‘feed bag’ on and weren’t afraid to hit whatever bait you dangled in front of them. During the next couple of weeks, we should see those eater size fish turning on and the bite on Winnie will only get better.
Traditional early fishing spots were all hot. The dishes, the gap, Plug Hat Point, and the rock pile were all giving up fish. Jig (any color green or combinations with green) and Shiners were the bait of choice, but fish were also being caught on fatheads, artificials and crank baits.
Look for the bite to continue to heat up in the coming weeks. Taking a couple days to fish on Winnie will be worth your while.
