Mississippi River Pool 4

The time has finally come, the walleyes are on the run and the weather is starting to warm. Put all that together and add in spending time with family and friends and you have what makes out to be a great weekend.

This past weekend was spent with my new father-in-law Manny and a father and son team from my area. We made the game plan earlier in the week that we were going to spend most all of the weekend out looking for big fish. We did succede to a point but had to work hard for the ones we got. Our presentations for the weekend were pitching blades and ringworms into current seams in shallow water.

The spots we targeted were sand areas in the 10 to 14 feet of water range with little current on them compared to the main channel current. Most fish seemed to be holding just inside the seam with a few fish being caught well past the seam in the slack water. The blade that produced the best for us was the 1/4 oz black B3 blade. That blade casted and retrieved with a slow hoping motion back to the boat seemed to produce best.
Our best plastic presentation was a Chart. Pepper ringworm on a black 3/16 Precision head casted to the same areas and retrieved slowly back to the boat. Vertical jigging the ringworm also put a few eaters in the boat for us.

I would like to send out a HUGE thank you to Art at Farm Island Repair and Marine. After a less than joyfull experience with another dealer while trying to work out some minor warrenty issues, Art came through for me and took care of me with no questions asked. It was a pleasure dealing with you Art and look forward to dealing with you again.
I would also like to thank those who shared my boat with me this past weekend. It was a pleasure fishing with you all and hope to do it again soon.
I will be back on the water on Friday through the weekend so if you are around Everts or see me out on the water dont be afraid to say HI.

Until next time…………..

  1. A few other pics from the weekend.

Also the sauger pictured is to what I believe to be a spawned out female from what I can tell.

We did have a few reports from people saying they caught a few spawned out females and also a few fish that were dropping spawn in the boat. With that said and the warmer weather on the way for the rest of the week and weekend I would look for the bite to be shaping up to be great very soon.

  2. Nice fish Eric! That wind Saturday made it a little challenging but as usual you found some nice fish. We had a couple of newbies in the boat so we vertical jigged most of the day. Got some eaters but no big gals.

  3. Nice fish Eric , I know you were chomping at the bit to get your boat back with all the reports coming in. I’m glad Art and the boys took care of you ,there a great dealership to work with!!!!

  4. Thanks again Eric for a great day on the river!! We had a great time and learned a lot in the process!! Hope to see you down there again soon!!

  5. Nice work Eric. Hopefully I can get running here by the weekend and maybe run into some of you guys and more importantly some of those Muddy Monster Eyes

It had to happen sometime right Now we just have to put the 2 of us in the boat together and try our luck out then

Thanks all for the kind replies. Hope to see some of you this coming weekend.

  7. I also just bought a new boat from FIRM in Aitkin and Art and Deb are great people to deal with. Hope to be sitting in that new boat real soon.

  8. Great job Eric. I’m planning on being down at Red Wing the next couple of days and hope to put a few eaters in the box and maybe get a piggie or two for a photo. Hope to see some of you guys down there.
    Steve

  9. Those are some sweet waleye’s great job guys But dont forget about the Saugers. Here is a 23 inch 6 lb 6 oz caught 4-4 handlining pool 4. (CPR )

  10. If that sauger was 6lbs6oz that would have been a new state record. Wasnt there a 6lb3oz that just became a new wisconsin state reord.I believe it also would have been a record fish in Minnesota!

We discussed that when we were weighing the fish and thought the record was bigger and let it go. Now I’m kicking myself. What do you do anyway we had a great time and memorys of a great day on the water. Anyway Dean at Everts said that he knows of a 6 pound 9 oz that was released also.
