The north winds blew like crazy on the big lake all weekend. Guide trips that were booked for Friday and Saturday night were canceled. It just seem to never let up not to mention off and on rain showers. I went out by my self Friday night and tried to anchor up on the wind blown southend rock piles. I managed to boat two slot fish on bobbers and minnows before the anchor gave way and decided one meal within 45 minutes was good enough for me.
My wife was bugging me to take her out Saturday during the day. I told her the lake was still blowing hard out of the northwest but standing on shore, it didn’t seem bad to her at all. I told her to take a gander at the trees bending and swaying looking like they were made of rubber. She still insisted on getting out. We loaded up the boat and headed for Garrison to get out of the wind. We got the boat in and headed for the deep gravel armed with jigs and Rainbow minnows. We got on top of a bar that usually holds nice schools of fall walleyes in deep water. We found fish right away on top of the reef using my Vexilar Edge fish finder.
Using a controlled drift, we stayed on top of the reef using 1/4oz Scenic Tackle jigs tipped with Rainbow minnows. We caught 4 fish in the first 20 minutes of fishing. Most fish were between 18 and 23 inches.
We also hooked into a large upper 30 inch class pike that bite the jig off at the boat. The key was to keep going back up and drifting back over the bar. From the looks of the locator, it was obvious the fish were on top feeding aggressively. We didn’t mark any fish on the edge or away from the edge. We landed 8 more fish and decided to head back after the bite had slowed. Since this bar was relatively small, I figured we probably had burned this spot out and the wife had gotten fall walleye fever out of her system. At least until next week.
What’s everyone thinking that this next full moon(October)will be like as compared in the past? Probably coming up the middle of next week.
I’m betting 45 – 60 fish a night on guide trips with good numbers over 26″. Likely a bit more wide spread action from last year when the good bite was localized and a bit tougher to find for some. It’s gonna be awesome!~

You found a woman that enjoys walleye fishing on Mlle lacs on a very windy fall day? You lucky devil. LOL
Gator Hunter
Yep, Lucky me
Hey Derek, New mug shot.
I keep telling myself I need to do that, have a beard in the current picture and haven’t had one for a year and a half.
Maybe when Koonce comes up I’ll get around to it?
Derek,
I love the mug shot! I was thinking of sending you our old Pewee B Team Hockey Picture. Remember the “miracle on ice” at the Blaine Ice Arena?
I heard this weekend was just as good on the pond. Keep the reports coming. I am a little jealous as “youth hockey and my coaching duties” has started and my new boat isn’t ready quite yet. So my fishing opporunties are slim this fall. If you have an opening this fall, let me know as I would love the chance to fish with you…
Ive got those Miracle On Ice pics too. I came across them a few months ago when I was cleaning out the basement. The ones I have are post goal celebration pics and a clip from the highlights on sportscenter
Do you have to get up at 4:30am every Sat and head to VMIA? Man did that suck. What the heck was our dads thinking?
Did they give you date on the new rig yet? If so, tack on two weeks or so.
