Mississippi River , Mn. – Pool 2 – 09/23/03

Jon J and I left the 494 ramp after work for an evening of working wing dams. The wind that was predicted had not started yet and the river was calm. We decided to run to the airport to start our trip. This spot proved to be dead for this evening. We worked it hard with jigs/plastics and cranks without a single bite.

Our next move was to go downstream , south of the old swing bridge , to hit some of the numerous wing dams. There were only a couple of cruiser type boats on the water so we had this area to ourselves. The next spot we picked proved to be a lucky one for me. I was throwing a Bomber A and caught this beautiful 26" walleye.

It was a good thing that we had the Twin’s baseball game on the radio. This proved to be better entertainment than the fishing. We hit 4 more spots with only a couple of missed bites to show for our efforts. We ended the evening on the water just as the Twin’s were wrapping up their victory.

I grew up with the Mississippi River at my back door and live close to the Pool 2 access. The river has much to offer for fishing opportunities. Mille Lacs Lake is another place where I spend many fishing hours Full Bio ›

  1. Ahhh, is there a better way to spend the first official day of fall than on the river? Twins on the radio, big fish squirming in the net, cool chill to the air….

    Jon J.

  2. Nice fish Dino! Looks like a pretty one!
Very soon those fish should start stacking up on the wingies down there.
We have been finding a handful of fish trolling shallow in the back water cuts recently.
Any color Bomber out performing another color for you guys recently?

ahhhhh…. any day now… aaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnny day

  4. We tried firetiger , pearl and chartreuse with no action. This fish came on a red craw right before it got dark.

  5. Sounds like fun guys. Is there a temp when they really get going down there. I’ve never fished pool 2, but my boat has been there.

  6. Mike,

I have noticed that once the water temps starts to hit the high 50’s to even low 60’s, things are really on cue to be going. Like I mentioned before, I think we are very close to the bite taking off. Last year the first week in October marked my first solid and consistant bite for numbers and nicer fish, so hopefully we close!

Now that your boat has been down there before, you should be able to have her take you to some of my honey holes!! I did have to blindfold her once however!
(Inside joke…Mike was kind enough to let me use his boat this spring to fulfill a guide trip while my Merc was being rebuilt!! )
    Thanks again Mike!

  7. Water temps on the Miss. in aitkin where about 58-9 last weekend. Water was very clear also. It must be heading this way.
Welcome aboard Ebass. You still up for a trip. How is the jon boat holding out. Smacked up the motor on mine pretty good over the weekend way up north on the Miss.

  8. I don’t think that it is the actual water temp as much as the continual drop in temperature that gets the walleyes real active in the fall. It is hard to pin point a temp that turns them on. Just my two cents.

  9. Gator,

I agree that its hard to pinpoint a temp when fish will get more and more active as the fall closes in on us. I use this as a general guideline and my history on this water has proven that these temps is usually the start of a more active lifestyle for these fish in one way shape or form. What happens below the surface in these conditions is really the driving force behind predicting a bite to get better and better. Everyone on the food chain is effected by weather changes and the change in their environment. I have noticed the start of migrational patterns in the schools of gizzrd shad in the last two-three weeks to tell me that things are changing and seem to be right on cue with what I have recorded in years past. So, hopefully with a luck and my fingers crossed the walleyes will not be far behind!! Just my 2 cents as well!

  10. Mike W, hey how’s it going. You’re over here to huh? Cool! I like this format better than before.

I made a reply on the other site on yor Aitkin trip. I can be up for a trip. I’d bring my boat to as I have many shore bound fishing freaks as friends. I know you fish Pool 2 alot. I haven’t been there on the water in a couple years. Where do you want to go?

This weekend I’m hitting the Sippi north of the cities. I’m going to give live bait a try I think.
