Pool 4 Mississippi River Walleye Report 2-2-2008

Well here is my first report for the 2008 season. I had the pleasure of sharing my boat with John Stears. We made a leisurely trip up to Everts and arrived around noon. Had a cup of coffee with Dean and got the scoop from him and Eric. Thanks for the info guys. Dean has the ramps in tip top shape.
John and I then launched the boat and off we went looking for some hog sauger.
This first picture is of John with a nice 22 inch sauger that fell prey to a ringworm.

With the advice I had gathered we opted to drag light jigs and ringworms. This is the presentation we stayed with all day. Which for my boat was a great decision, we finished our day with roughly 30 fish, with seven or eight over the 20 inch mark. We were using 1/8 oz jigs and ringworms with a down river presentation. Here is another fish from our day

The temperatures hit the 30 degree mark today and it was like spring for a brief moment. Although the sun never shined and it was dull and gloomy all-day our hooks hit home on some thunderous strikes. This winter seems to have been plenty long enough already. It was great to get out and get our strings stretched. These saugers were just blasting our baits today. So the sun was shining in this old guys heart it was a fantastic day on the water, we are truly blessed to live next to this great fishery. Here is another of the days catch.

With this warm break I thought more boats would have been on the water, I only counted 10 boats all day. I am making this report short and quick. Well good luck out there and have a safe fun filled 2008.

When I'm not fishing or working I'm looking for nitecrawlers...and Tournament Angler for the past 20 plus years.

  1. Greg,
    GREAT REPORT….
DID John catch ALL the big Saugers????? or what.

Super afternoon on the River, sure are some Great looking Saugers.
    Awesome…..
    Jack..

  2. Guys,

I was just along for the ride. Greg setup all of the drifts and had the channel edges dialed. Greg is being shy so I’ll post his pictures.

    John

  3. Oh no not shy John you just looked alot prettier and warmer then I did. Nice snosuit John.
The other thing I know how jealous some of you are when I am wearing my fur hat.

I tell you though those fish were really crushing those baits today, jeez I love it when they hit like that.

So if you get a chance stop up to Everts. Dean has all the up to date info and all the right baits.

Have fun and we released all our fish today.

  4. It was good seeing you gentlemen on the water yesterday. We had pretty similar results. We didn’t get on the water till 2 and betwen 2 and 3 we could do no wrong. With 3 guys in the boat we had many doubles and one quadruple in the first hour. Our only problem was we were after eaters and everything was 18″ and over. That is a heck of a problem to have At 3 or so the wind came up alittle and our bite died off for awhile. We finally found fish towards evening but the size wasn’t as good with alot of 15 and 16 inchers. We got our limit of 18 and threw back many more with 5 sauger 19 inches and over going back. We were dragging in 18 to 22 feet with 5/16 jigs. I know the boy was going to put up a post but after we got home he went out crappie fishing so he is still in bed. Kids these day!! We had a first time river fisherman in our boat yesterday and I think Joe will have a hard time looking through a hole in the ice for walleye after yesterday!

  5. Hey Team Redneck

It was good chatting out there yesterday, you guys were really putting a whoopin on them.

We found pulling down river with the light jigs just off bottom was really triggering the bigger fish. They were almost ripping the rod out of your hand.

Here is a photo of our three best colors however we were having such good success these are the only colors we really used. Opps probably should have tried a bunch of others but ran out of time. When dark came we got into the tiny ones so we packed it up.

It was good to see you out there and good for you in breakin in a new prospect of a river rat. Welcome to the river Joe

  6. Great report guys. Nice pic’s and info to boot.

Vandy, where’d ya get that ‘road kill’ hat?
    Don’t loose it, it’s a classic!

  7. Careful: Flatfish

2 virgin Malaysian bunnies were sacrificed to make that fine head wear.
Jealousy it is such an ugly emotion when it rears its little head.

    It’s a warm one that’s fur sure.

Hey Jack you better get down there. Can’t you hear the saugers calling

Thanks Bret you seem to be tearing them up down there on the hard water. Keep up the good work.

  8. Nice going guys
It was kind of nice fishing with very few other boats out. On Friday, there were only 2 boats besides us

  9. Team Redneck

Man it was fun watching you guys wail on em! We were hitting scattered fish…you guys had em hemmed up. It was amazing what the average size was. I don’t know what year those fish hatched but it must have been a super spawn. To have the number of fish that size is just an awesome experience. The talk in our boat went like this; there’s one… need the net…nah, it’s just another 18 incher.

My new Snowsuit is awesome…warm and not restrictive. Yesterday wasn’t much of a test but I can tell it will perform in bitter cold.

    John

No one is jealous of the hat Greg. They are only jealous of your virgin bunnies

Looks like another great day for your boat
