Mississippi River Pool 4 1/27/08

With the warmer than normal temps forcasted for this weekend I just couldn’t stay off the river. Going into the weekend I wasn’t sure how the fishing would be since we had a major cold snap for most of the week. I found my answer to that in short order once fishing…… it didn’t bother them one bit.

One major thing I have noticed over the years of fishing this river system is that the fish do not re-act to fronts passing by like they do in lakes. It seems as though the more constant the water level and water temp are the better the fishing. This meaning that the first day or last day of a major weather change aren’t nearly as much of a factor, mainly because everything is still pretty much steady. With that being said, it still can change things slightly. The fish may move a little deeper, or shallower, and the also may want a differnt presentation or a differnt color.

This weekend I pretty much ran my same program as weeks prior. I did make one slight changed that greatly increased our catch rate during the mid-day. Instead of pitching blades to our normal sand flats and rip rap shorelines, we switched it up to going vertical and going deeper. I noticed that the fish we have been catching lately up shallow have moved out deeper on sand breaks. 14 to 18 feet seemed to be our best depths for the mid-day bite. Both vertical jigging and pitching these depths worked well with the 1/4 oz B3 Blades. Our best colors would have to be anything firetiger, or black. The afternoon bite proved to be much of the same as weeks prior. Dragging 1/16th and 3/32 jigs with firecracker Chart. Tail, or purple chart. tail seemed to be best.

I was also informed of a good mid-day dragging bite in deeper water. Best colors I heard were Chartruese orange core, and firecracker chart. tail. I am not positive on depths or jig weights so maybe someone that got in on this bite will chime in on that.

It was a great weekend once again. It was great seeing all of you around, Jim, Jason, Kurt, Doc, Mr. Incredible, Scott, Dustin, Robby and everybody else that I didn’t mention.

Sorry about the last two pictures and the pictures to follow. The camera was out in the cold and we took pictures inside. Cold camera and warm air do not go together very well.

Until next time………..

  1. A few more photos.

The last picture is for you, Brian K. Although the big jon boat didnt make it down there , the boys did, and did very well.

  2. Thanks for the report and pics Eric. Some of the best weights I have seen have been in cold nasty weather. River fish react differnt than lake fish and alot of us who live in the area of the river can be glad of that. Kind of like having our cake and eating it too. Pool 4 does a great job of spoiling us for sure.
    Thanks, Bill
