Lake of the Woods, Mn Walleye report 1-12-08

I just got back from my third trip to Lake of the Woods this year. This trip had 12 of us looking to get into some good walleye and sauger action. We arrived at WigWam thursday night and most of us didn’t quite get the good night sleep we planned on. I was a good thing though as we were able to help out another gentleman that slipped and fell in an out of the way area and broke his ankle. We were able to carry him into the lodge and from there Baudette’s EMT took over.

We were fishing in 28-30′ come friday morning. The fishing wasn’t fast and furious, but we had enough action to keep things interesting. From sunup to about 2pm our house caught most all our fish on a red glow Vertiglow Demon or a white and pink Slim Jig with a fathead under a bobber. Jigging it scared the fish away. At about 2 the fish got a little more active so we left 1 bobber setup down and jigged a gold, red, or perch Go-Devil. We eneded up keeping 16 fish and released at least that many. Most were saugers with the walleyes coming thru later in the day. Big fish came from another house and was the 36″ pike pictured that hit the same bobber setup.

Saturday we were in the same location. The fish still liked the pink and white jigs under the bobber, but they showed a prefernce to a plain hook as well. The Go-Devils also caught more fish the second day, especially in the morning. Our house caught quite a few nice walleyes early with the saugers coming midday. Our afternoon bite was slow for us, but one of our other houses had a real good flurry. Just depends if the school swims by you or not. We did catch a real nice perch out of our house, but did not see any pout either day while the others houses did. We also had a decent number of tulibee come through both on the bottom and suspended.

Unfortunatly I haven’t gotten most of the pictures from the other guys and wanted to get a report up ASAP. Most of the anglers that went had never been to LOTW before, but all want to make it a yearly trip. Tom, Judy and Kevin all went out of their way to make the trip great as usual. For those heading up for the get together, count the days. I know I can’t wait!!

I love fishing both walleyes and bass. For walleyes I spend most of my time guiding on Mille Lacs. For bass I spend a ton of time on Minnetonka, but I cover most of the greater Minneapolis/St Paul Full Bio ›

  1. Great report Mike. Have you guys been bring your own houses up or are you fishing out of resort houses?

  2. We’ve been using their houses. The spoons are 1/8oz. I don’t know the size under the bobber, but it is no bigger than 1/2 in long. We’ve had a lot of fun up there this year, and there is more to come.

Hopefully Judy will post a picture of the little fishy her kid got the day before we arrived.
