La Crosse Area Ice Fishing Report 1/13/08

There were a few miles put on the truck between Saturday and Sunday looking for a couple different species of fish and an aggressive bite. Well, no aggressive bite was found but there was a good selection of different fish caught

Saturdays target was to be crappies and hopefully a toothy critter taking the offering of a shiner hanging below a tip up. Mike C and neutron put together a fish fry thanks to some 10-11 inch crappies biting at first light before shutting down. For myself, I found a toothy critter but it wasn’t caught on the tip ups.

The 31inch pike slammed a little moxy jig tipped with a waxie. After using a universal langue that Mike perfected “oh, ooooh” Mike was over in a hurry to lend a helping hand The northern put the St Croix UL ice legend rod, and Pfluger President Micro spooned with 2lb Trilene mono to the test All the equipment held up well and with patience during the battle this fish was iced There was no magic jig that the crappies were looking for. They were fussy and with a constant changing of color and style a guy could find a few takers.

Sunday morning JP Mason and I decided to try for some perch. We walked out just before light to find good friend John R set up and excited to use his new MarCum LX-1. The first fish John iced with his new flasher was this 12.5inch perch, she is a beauty John. We found the perch to be just as finicky as the crappies were the day before and again things needed to be changed up often to convince the finicky orange fins to take the offering. Lil Cecil’s produced most of the fish for JP and myself tipped with either a waxie or minnow head. Mr. Mason also convinced a lost 16 inch Walleye to inhale the bait.

The key to catching fish both days was to keep changing up colors, styles and baits. The bite was tough in the areas fished this weekend but there was still some nice fish caught, and some nice fish fry’s taken off the ice by good friends.

The crappies were taken out of 12fow suspended 5-7 feet below the ice. The perch were found shallower in 8fow and hugging bottom. Ice conditions are in great shape with the snow adhering to the surface of the ice making it easy walking. Staying on the move did produce some action and nice fish both days.

Good luck fishing people

  1. Thanks for Bret and John R we had ourselves a GREAT lunch today. Thanks Guys

The bite was on then off most of the morning. I did do alot of hole hopping and would find one or two takes every other hole. I left the ice around 11:00 AM, and picked up five nice perch just before leaving. I could have done better, but was having trouble getting a few fish out of the hole and onto the ice before they got off.

It was nice to get out with Bret again, and nice to meet you John R. Thanks again for the help on getting a fish fry pulled together. I got home, cleaned fish, and made them for lunch. I had two boys very happy to be eating FRESH Fish.

    Thanks Again,
    JP

  2. Great report and pics Bret. Very nice fish. I bet that northern was a blast on a very light action ice fishing rod.
    Thanks, Bill

Is that the only walleye you’ve gotten in that area?

There is an occasional eye taken on the flat. The area we would normally fish them in is close to the main channel with 15fow.

How long did it take to get that northern in?

It felt like an hour but I would guess 10 – 15 minutes. At times there was nothing I could do but keep a tight line and a bend in the rod until the fish decided to head back towards the hole It was a true test of patience and equipment

How thick was the ice guys?

We were on a good 8 inches of ice. The ice is in great condition on the backwaters of pool 8
