Pool 10,weed edge crappies

After a long week end and not being able to get out,I had a chance today to hit pool 10 for some weed edge crappies and gills.Reports were coming in that the crappies were sliding onto the edges of a large lily pad field that is adjacent to a running slough.

Focusing on the edge of the pads,I started drilling along the face for well over a hundred yards while popping a few sporadic holes into the pad field itself.

As it turned out, fish were taken out of almost every hole that was cut as these crappies were spread out and at times very aggressive.

When fishing these shallow waters and finding a hungry school, the electronics get turned off and the long stick hole hopping begins.

Lure selection today was actually pretty easy for a change.

Little cecils, purests, and rembrandts all produced well with fish being nabbed on the diamond jigs and gill pills also.Pink was the ticket!Today was just one of those days where color played an important role.

In January, when you are lucky enough to get out in glove-less weather and you know the crappies are active, drill as many holes as you can.Next, shed a layer or two, grab the sticks and hole hop your troubles away. With the heavy fog and the continuous mist rising from the ice it was one of those mystical old man river days.

For more info on these long rods a short article has been written

  1. JSfishin, on the pulsator rods the line goes through the blank, so you don’t have any guides to worry about freezing up. They are the ticket for shallow water fish!

  2. I think that fog picture is pretty cool too!

Oh, and good job getting on the fish Jeff! Keep me posted on ice conditions this week. I won’t be able to get out there ’till Firday afternoon at the earliest!

  3. Jeff, did your Dad make it out too? I know he was thinking of heading out that day. How’s the ice holding up after that rain?

I bet you stuck a few of those green carp out there too.

  4. Dad took home a nice fry Bird, great getting out with him.Don’t ask him about the 14incher he had to the top that I accidently let get away As far as the green carp went, don’t worry,we saved you a few

The ice is holding up very well, still silver looking without any black spots………..YET!

  5. Nice fish Jeff! who is that in the second picture there, i recognize him, maybe a Placke? Dad and I were gonna take the day off today and go fishin but the someone didnt like that idea, and I’m sure you know who that is Whens the next time ur headed out?

  6. Now that looks like fun! How skinny was the water in the pads? Do you use the long rod so the fish don’t spook?

These crappies were cruising in 4ft but like a typical speck they were riding high. The long sticks do play a key role in the spook factor.

  8. Good post, was out Sunday myself in Pool 10 and pink was the ticket. If it wasn’t pink it was black. Rembrant’s and rocker style jigs tipped with plastic worked well.

    Nice job Mr.Kayle
Let me be the first to welcome you to In-Depth Outdoors, the hottest site going

  10. Thanks Jeff Jenson!

I like using a long rod for pannies at times. It also helps for that further hole in the shack at times , as long as I do not hit the fabric.

I also joined up to check out on Hanson,DTRO, LFC and others. The other site I use, is down and has had some issue for some time now. I have lurked on this site for some time and figured it was worth it to register.
